How to handle the mid-semester slump

Melanie Sabol – Copy Editor

It’s that dreaded time of the year again: the mid semester slump. The mid semester slump is that time between midterms and Thanksgiving when the papers and work continues with what seems as if there is no end in sight. That 8:10 Biology course that you’re signed up for that was once appealing at the beginning of the semester is no longer a great idea.

Between early morning classes and late night study sessions to finish up papers, your sleep schedule has been thrown off and your eating habits have gone completely out the window. We can blame this all on the mid semester slump.

But how did we get to this point in the semester so quickly? It feels as if the semester just started with the ideas in mind to stay focused, productive, and on top of all of our assignments. Yet, here we are getting the sluggish feeling of not wanting to go to class and just escape from all of the craziness that we call college.

We’re now roughly 11 weeks into the semester and up until now we’ve all been the ideal student. Here we are now becoming less concerned about our papers, the skipping of classes, and the procrastination has become part of your daily thinking for your classes.

Don’t get me wrong, I would love to stay in bed and watch Netflix all day, but it’s still too early to give up on the rest of the semester with still a few weeks to go before Thanksgiving.

So how does one beat the mid semester slump? Give yourself a wake up call and realize that there is still plenty of time between now and Thanksgiving break — which means that there is plenty of time for homework and papers to be turned in. Dig yourself out of this slump and use these helpful tools (that help me every semester) to pull yourself out of this hole.

Get yourself back on track. Not sure what’s due in any of your classes anymore? Bring yourself back to the beginning of the semester. Familiarize yourself with the syllabi for your classes once again, just as you did in the beginning of the year. Write down everything that is due along with due dates. Having the assignments visible with due dates alongside will allow you to get back on task. Set aside specific times during your day to study, work out, and relax. Getting back to a schedule will help you out in the long run with homework and keeping a clear mind.

Eat healthy…or healthier. Since we are all up late at night doing homework, the take out orders are inevitable. Instead of having late night take out orders switch it up with fresh fruit and veggies along side with good carbs (no greasy foods). Bringing more healthy foods into your diet will give you more energy as well as just making your body feel better in general.

So close to the finish line, stay positive. I know this sounds easier said than done at this point in the semester but we have to keep on going. College isn’t going to get any easier as the semesters go on, so keep a positive mind. Things happen and it doesn’t always go as planned. Just remember that if you keep a positive mind and attitude things will start going your way.

With the end so close in sight for this semester, do your best to hang in there. Take a break from your homework whenever you can and just do things for yourself. You’ll love the reward of the good grades once the semester is over. You’re almost there!
