Usually when a celebrity writes a book it’s one of the following. The first is an autobiography of their side of their life story such as Miley Cyrus’ “Miles to Go.” The next is a fiction novel where the story may or may not be good, such as Lauren Conrad’s “L.A. Candy” series. Or it can be tips or tricks on how to live their way of life, such as Lo Bosworth’s “The Lo-Down.”
Demi Lovato, like many of those celebrities, also shares the title of best-selling author to her long list of jobs. However, unlike the celebrities that I have mentioned, her book is a bit different than her peers.
“Staying Strong: 365 Days a Year” is a bit different than your average book. There are no chapters or parts. Instead, there are pages for each day of the year. Each of the pages is a quote, a positive message and an action that you can take to make your day a bit better than the last.
Many people, including myself read each of the days for the year. I did that every day last year. Each day had an inspirational quote that Demi herself lives by. These quotes can either be from the bible, a song, television show, movie or just an inspirational quote to get you motivated. In addition to that, it also contains an action that you can take to better yourself. This can vary from taking time out of your day to pray, do a kind action or to write a list of what you are grateful for.
The book also served as a reminder that it’s okay to take some time off for your own mental health. I believe that this is important for everyone, whether they are in college, going through a rough time, or wanting to remain more positive. It’s perfect for those who want to make this year a fresh start, and start seeing the world in a more positive manner.
However, the main message of the book is to learn how to love yourself, which I believe is something that is very important for each and everyone of us out there to learn. It’s something that Demi herself makes sure that each and every one of her fans knows.
It’s no secret that Demi herself had her struggles, and has been extremely public about them. Lovato has spent time in a treatment center in 2010 for bulimia, bipolar disorder and other issues. Ever since then, she’s been very public about her struggles, which had helped her become a more positive role model than some of her peers. (Ahem, Miley Cyrus) These quotes were handpicked by Lovato, and were words that she herself had found strength in whenever she was in those times of darkness.
“Staying Strong: 365 Days a Year” is something that I recommend highly for anyone. I think that it’s important to really take time for yourself, even if it’s only reading one page a day. The quotes and the way that she has written things were honestly really relatable. Of course, I may be biased due to the fact that I am a Demi Lovato fan but this book is really well done.
If you liked “Staying Strong: 365 Days a Year”, there’s also an accompaniment journal called ‘Staying Strong: A Journal’. The companion journal goes along with the book, and has quotes and room for reflection.
It doesn’t matter if you are a Demi Lovato fan, or if you’re going through a hard time. Everyone out there can benefit from this inspiring book.
*I give this book 5 out of 5 owls
