The awesomeness that is sunglasses

Simone Virzi, Staff Writer:
They’re black, edgy, and fabulous. I’ll be honest, I feel invincible when I’m rocking them. They’re almost as old as I am, so they can be identified as vintage. Let’s disregard the fact that they’re a little too big for my face and occasionally they’ll slide down my nose. Nevertheless, I still love them, my black Aviator Ray Bans. Coming in close at second are a pair I paid five bucks for. The frames are black and pink zebra print; they’re hot. Some people feel ‘naked’ without their phone; I might as well be naked without sunglasses.
Back in February, Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring. Today, the snow is gone and the sun is trying to make another comeback, like Madonna. Where there’s a sun, there are glasses. Purchasing an awesome pair of shades for spring is as essential as spring cleaning, especially if you’re a hoarder. If you haven’t done so already, get a new pair. They’re the perfect accessory, regardless if you’re a twig or a ton of love.
Since there are so many different colors and frame styles, you can definitely find a pair that suits your face and your individuality. Maybe a pair of lime green sunglasses fits your fun personality. How about leopard print to play out your animal side? Perhaps white sunglasses will work for you because they won’t make your complexion look as pale. If all of these appeal to you, get all of them! It’s not being selfish; it’s being a diverse individual. Besides, the idea of having just one pair of sunglasses is ludicrous. The more pairs and the more variety you have, the more fun you will have picking out which pair to wear.
Sunglasses don’t have to cost a fortune. The next time you take a trip to the mall to visit the puppies at the pet store, take a look around other stores and you may come across your new spring pair of shades. American Eagle has cute pairs of oversized sunglasses that are a modern Jackie O. Hot Topic sells a variety of shades, whether you want hearts on the arms of the glasses or neon pink and yellow sunglasses. If you are on a more flexible budget, Sunglass Hut is a good place to shop. They carry a wide range of designer glasses, and you’re likely to find a pair you will want to try on.
Not only are sunglasses fashionable, they are beneficial too. Think about driving to the beach in the middle of summer; singing along with the radio and not worrying about anything. Without sunglasses, or at least a sun visor, it will be difficult to see if the sun is right in your eyes.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, “sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays offer the best protection. The majority of sunglasses sold in the United States, regardless of cost, meet this standard.”
UV rays can cause the same kind of damage to your eyes as your skin, causing burns, blindness, and an increased risk of cancer. To avoid these health issues, play it safe. Look for sunglasses that have a sticker on the lens that say they are UV protected.
If you’re looking for songs to inspire your search for new awesome shades, try the classic “Cheap Sunglasses” by ZZ Top or “Sunglasses at Night” by Corey Hart. “Boys of Summer” by Don Henley originally, later done by The Ataris, is another great song that references wayfarers. If you don’t know these songs, check them out on Youtube.
