One of the various film posters for “The Concert for a New South Africa (Durban).”
The greatest singer of all time, Whitney Houston, has made an appearance once again on the big screens for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The estate of Whitney Houston released a never-before-seen concert film from her time in Durban, South Africa in 1994 that was only shown on Oct. 23 and 27.
Houston was the first major Western artist to perform in Africa after apartheid ended and Nelson Mandela was elected president of South Africa.
The concert shown in theaters was one of three nights. The other concerts took place in Johannesburg and Cape Town. This particular concert took place Nov. 8, 1994.
To accompany the film’s release, the estate released the live album “The Concert for a New South Africa (Durban)” on Friday, Nov. 8.
Her aura throughout the film was magical. You can feel the emotion as she sung her heart out and her eyes glistened.
I was first introduced to Whitney Houston as a toddler, and she was one of the first artists I enjoyed listening to and still very much do today. I never had the opportunity to see her in person, yet watching this concert film felt like I was in the front row.
This is not the only Whitney Houston film that has been released in movie theaters. 2022 saw the re-release of 1992 romantic thriller “The Bodyguard” to commemorate the 30th anniversary. By December of that year, an official biopic was released all over the world.
I would like to give a big thank you to the Whitney Houston estate for continuing to feed the fans new content 12 years after her death.
Her legacy is so remarkable that she has amassed 1.4 million followers on her official Instagram and 1 million on TikTok in her afterlife.
We all should give credit to her estate for not milking her legacy like other artists’. Documentaries, books, films, music, merchandising, etc., have all been spaced out perfectly. Either way, I am not complaining one bit and will always swipe my card for anything Whitney Houston related.
If the rumors are true, then we can expect to see this rare film released on streaming in the upcoming future.
All I can do is cry because I strongly believe that she has no business being dead.
I encourage all who read this to listen to Whitney Houston’s discography and watch some of her stellar performances on YouTube. Until then, stream or buy the concert album.
