Sociology is the study of human beings. It ranges from the study of crime to the effects of religion on a society. The Sociology Club here on Southern Connecticut State University’s campus is open to all majors. The club focuses on the New Haven community and aspects of social justice surrounding the community. As Southern is in an urban environment, it serves as a perfect breeding ground for an organization like the Sociology club.
Diana Roman, junior and president of the club, shares the club’s main goals. “Our club motto is based around the concept of social justice topics in and around campus as well as civic engagement activities in the New Haven area.” said Roman. “As the Sociology Club, we strive for social justice and focus on community based fundraising in particular. We will often have discussions about different social issues and try to figure out how to bring awareness to them.”
The Sociology Club also does a lot of fundraising activities for the social issues they bring up in their club meetings.
“Our fundraising events consist of activities like mixing your own trail mix for $1. We supply the trail mix ingredients and the bags and the students get to create their own trail mix,” said Roman. “We raise the money to buy school materials and supplies for a local New Haven public school during the beginning of terms. We will also be having a No Make-Up Day Event, which helps to raise awareness about makeup and body image.”
The club’s fundraising endeavors cover a full range of social issues from poverty to body Image. The issues the club raises awareness for are also issues that affect students on a personal level, which gives the organization even better relatability for its members.
The Sociology Club is not just for Sociology majors. Any major can join, because the club is for whoever is interested in social issues.
“Our members come from different backgrounds,” said Roman. “Some of our majors consist of Sociology, Psychology, Elementary Education, Political Science, or any major like that. If you are someone who’s interested in Social Activism and Social Justice, this is the club for you. We are striving to make a difference in the world, one area at a time. If you would like to come on our journey to change the world, hop on board.”
The organization is a great place for any student, from the freshmen looking for their place on campus to the students that want to get involved more with the community through service projects.
The Sociology Club will be holding an event this upcoming week as well. Roman said, “Also we will be having a ‘Hands Up, Don’t Shoot’ Rally in the New Haven Green Oct. 24th at 5 p.m..”
The “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” campaign takes a look at police brutality from the past and present and how it affects society. The Rally aims to spread awareness about police brutality to the community of New Haven and it is sponsored by the Sociology Club.
Sociology Club meets every Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. in the Engleman basement in room C024. For more information about the club or the “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” rally on the New Haven Green, contact The Sociology Club president, Diana Roman by email at romand5@owls.southernct.edu.
