Every year, the fall club fair brings together into the academic quad all of Southern’s clubs and organizations. Accompanied with loud music and thousands of students, the club fair can’t be missed. Tables line the quad and every organization tries to find new prospective members, just in time for their first meetings of the semester. Southern Connecticut State University puts on a club fair every semester for students to see what is available to get involved in on campus.
SCSU staples such as Student Government Association, Programs Council, Residence Hall Association and Greek Life set up camp at the club fair. Along with these well-known organizations, the club fair is also a great platform for Southern’s smaller, lesser known clubs and organizations to show Southern what they have to offer students.
One of these organizations is SCSU’s Chapter of the American Marketing Association. Vice President Paul Barlow and Treasurer Brandon Egervari eagerly presented the club at the club fair. The American Marketing Association welcomes all majors to join. They provide members with resume-builders, guest speakers, and networking potential.
“We educate our members about business but it’s not a marketing-oriented club. We learn about connections after graduation and the importance of a good resume. It’s helpful for everyone, not just business majors.” said Vice President Paul Barlow. The American Marketing Association’s first meeting and guest speaker event is on Friday, Sept. 19, 2014 at 1:10 p.m. in the Trade Room of the School. The first speaker is Bill DeRosa, Owner of Talking Finger, an award-winning social media marketing agency. The American Marketing Association is a national association with chapters on many campuses, which gives members an endless amount of networking opportunities.
Another organization at the club fair was the SCSU Accounting Society. Elisabeth McNivens, Treasurer, spoke on behalf of the club. McNivens said, “We have meetings where we connect with business individuals and we provide insight for current accounting students. We talk a lot about the business aspects of accounting.”
Sci-Fi Club is another lesser-known club on Southern’s campus. The Sci-Fi Club doesn’t only cater to Sci-Fi fans, but also horror fans, or any fandoms, scientific or otherwise. Emma Farrow, of the Sci-Fi Club said, “We aim to create a safe place for fans of all different types to come together and express their interests.”
The Sci-Fi Club conducts a bi weekly tv show viewing. All the members put a TV episode of their choice into a hat and then one is picked out. They also have movie trips when sci-fi movies come out and game nights. During their main meetings, they have huge discussions about whatever topic is trending. The Sci-Fi is welcoming members currently and they have meetings on Wednesdays from 1-2 p.m. in Adanti Student Center room 306. For more information about Sci-Fi Club, you can contact Emma Farrow at farrowe2@owls.southernct.edu
New to Southern’s campus, the Meditation Club offers calmest to students. The Meditation Club promotes mindful activities to reduce students’ stress levels and be more self-reflective. Club President Malcolm Zawacki said, “We do outdoorsy type activities and we collaborate with Active Minds.”
Getting involved in college is the easiest way to have a great time. College can be stressful, and many clubs and organizations provide students with resources that can help them succeed like a support system, on campus resources, and experience that will be vital in the world after graduation. Make the most of your four years and get involved on campus.
