How to get that special someone a special gift

Paige Tillinghast – Special to the Southern News

Thanksgiving has officially come and gone now, which means that the holiday season is in full swing. This is truly my favorite time of year, but I know for others it can be extremely stressful.

With only a few weeks until Christmas and Hanukkah, people are scrambling to figure out what gifts to get each other this year and that can be tough sometimes. It can be easier to figure out what some people want because they will literally tell you, while others might make a list of ideas.

However, what kinds of gifts should you get for your significant other? You’re supposed to know this person the best, but sometimes it’s harder to figure out what to get them because you want it to be perfect. I think the amount of time you’ve been with the person should also be taken into account, because that might also help you figure out what to do for them.

If you’ve been together for a decent amount of time I think one of the first aspects that should be decided is the price you’re willing to spend.

When the holidays come around my boyfriend and I always decide to set a limit on how much money we’ll spend on each other. If we go over or under a little bit it’s okay, but just having that general price in mind can help you stop from going overboard.

giftIf you’ve only been with your significant other for a short amount of time, I think it’s important to talk to them about ideas that they may want. That way you don’t feel obligated to get something crazy expensive while they end up getting you something small, or vice versa. In any relationship communication is key and that is still important when figuring out holiday gifts as well.

Once you figure out the basic price range, it’s up to you to make the final decisions. If you’re with someone who doesn’t give you a list there are actually a lot of websites and stores that can help you with ideas and suggestions.

Websites like Amazon and Etsy give you the option to look up ‘gifts for him/her’ and they’re usually pretty spot-on. Even if they don’t show you exactly what you’re looking for, I know that they at least could spark an idea for something else you might get them.

Most clothing stores will have this option online as well. In addition, when you go to the stores themselves there will typically be a person who works there to help you figure out a great gift. Just having a professional to talk to can help you sort through your thoughts and ideas, and they might make a suggestion you never even thought of.

For those of you who have been in a long-term relationship one of the actions that is really helpful is to keep track of ideas throughout the year. Whenever I hear my boyfriend mention something he might want, I write it down in the ‘notes’ section of my iPhone.

Even if he ends ups getting whatever he mentioned for himself at some point, there’s a good chance that he won’t. This method has worked really well for me the past few years, because not only are the ideas straight from his mouth, but he also ends up being surprised that I was listening so well.

Nevertheless, no matter what you get for your significant other just keep in mind that if they love being with you then they’ll appreciate whatever you get for them. Homemade and do-it-yourself gifts are always wonderful options as well. It may be a cliché, but it really is the thought that counts when it comes to the holiday season.
