5 Movies to Add to Your Halloween Movie-Marathon

Jene ThomasGeneral Assignment Reporter

As she stumbled through the woods, with her right hand on her injured knee, she fell face and landed at the foot of the killer. She got up and backed into a tree before the killer slit her throat.

The scene was shown in the original Friday the 13th, which happens to be one of the most popular slasher sagas featuring 11 movies with the infamous machete-wielding killer, Jason Voorhees.

As Halloween rapidly approaches, put the costumes away for a bit and plant yourself on the couch in the dark to re-watch some of the classic movies best shown during this time of year.

Beginning the list is of course…

Friday the 13th(1980-1993)
It’s one of those movies that spiked fear into our hearts with only a hockey mask. I know I’m not the only one taken back by seeing someone wearing a hockey mask costume late at night. Voorhees finds anyway to kill his victims, whether it’s by squeezing the victim’s head with his bare hands, pushing their head through the wall or with his trusted machete. However, try to stick to the classic Friday the 13th movies. After The Final Friday, they just aren’t as good, especially Freddy vs. Jason.

But speaking of Freddy, keep an eye out for…

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984-1994)
Any movie where Johnny Depp gets sucked through a bed and a fountain of blood shoots out in his place deserves a second viewing, or a third. The franchise stars the knife-for-fingers maniac Freddy Krueger. Think you can avoid your problems by sleeping? In your dreams. Krueger isn’t just in your nightmares, but he becomes them. You know those dreams where you fall from the sky and right before you hit the ground, you wake up? Not in this case. If you die in your sleep, you die in real life.

Halloween is celebrated throughout all ages. Many youngsters celebrate the season with…

Hocus Pocus (1993)
Admit it, when Hocus Pocus came on Disney Channel, many of us were glued to our seats to watch it. A simple California family relocates to Salem, Mass., which is known for what? Witches. To make matters worse, Max, his sister Dani and his date Allison walk into the old abandoned house and start touching everything. Of course something bad is going to happen, but I’m sure they didn’t think three nasty witches would be resurrected. Also, let’s be honest. Who wouldn’t want a talking cat that saved you from danger?

If only the Freelings had that cat in…

Poltergeist (1982)
Any horror movie with a child talking to inanimate objects is going to freak you out, especially if she says “they’re here.” Personally, if I saw that my furniture looked to be moving on its own or glass broke at random times, I’d evacuate that house with my family, immediately. Lucky for those who live on campus, the dorms lack malevolent spirits. However just to be safe, don’t keep your televisions on a channel that just has static.

If you’re going to celebrate Halloween correctly, you definitely have to watch:

Be sure to catch Poltergeist on channel 918. The schedule is listed in the student center, as well as on the Southern website.

Halloween (1978-2009)
In this case, all of the Halloween movies are acceptable to watch. After all, it is Halloween. It basically invented the slasher flicks. If a man in a white mask who walks slower than my grandma and only wields a steak knife can kill so many people, he is not one to mess with. I mean, he did try to kill his sisters.

It is expected that you watch horror movies during this time of year and the cables are only trying to facilitate that. AMC has had a horror movie marathon for weeks.
