They aren’t an active club this semester, but they have big plans for the upcoming spring semester, said Jonathan Marcellus, junior computer science major and president of the Men About Business club.
“Our goal for the spring is to really get this club going by recruiting members, organizing some programs and group discussions on controversial topics for students to have another way to more involved on campus,” said Marcellus.
Some topics the club plans to touch upon in their discussions next semester include: domestic violence, sexual and child abuse, the examination of various types of relationships that college students can relate to, and the study of how music affects the youth.
The Men About Business club was founded in the early 200’s by SCSU alumni Trevor Ford, but the club has since become inactive, said Torrin Howard, junior social work major and treasurer of the club. They have roughly 10 members and are still looking for members to bring the club to new heights.
“I joined the club to become a better man,” said Howard. “I actually reached out to Trevor Ford and he explained to us how to run the club successfully and what we need to do get it back up and running.”
According to the club’s mission statement, they aim to help students build their networks around people who will support them in future endeavors, do community service, and collaborate with other organizations.
“When I first joined the club we were going to Lincoln Bassett to do tutoring sessions so we are trying to get back to that because we benefit from it as much as the kids we are helping,” said Marcellus.
The President said he’s determined to run a club that all members can benefit from. He said the club is in the rebuilding phase, but anticipates a big return once their ideas come to action.
“Our plan is to have everyone learn from each other,” said Marcellus. “I have some interviewing experience from taking communication classes and being around different opportunities that other members might not have. Information or skills one member has could be useful for another.”
The club would like to establish more of a relationship with other organizations and resources around campus in hopes of creating helpful events that students can benefit from.
“We really want to team up with the Career Center on campus and get to the point where we are doing one to two events with them over the course of the semester,” said Marcellus.
The club is looking for motivated business or accounting majors, but anyone can join them if they share the same mindset as them or have suggestions to get the club going again, said Howard.
“One idea we had was to hold a workshop where we explain the process of creating the best resume possible and also teach proper interview etiquette so that our members can have an edge on competition when they are applying for jobs in the real world,” said Howard.
Students who are interested should be on the lookout for the club’s Facebook page, which is currently under construction, but also take the initiative to reach out to either Marcellus or Howard. They are currently working on deciding the weekly meeting schedule, but said there’s a chance it won’t be announced until next semester due to schedule changes.
