SCSU’s NAACP hosted a Labor Day BBQ on the Academic Quad on September 1. Members of the college chapter invited all students to join them to kick off the new semester.
Maya Kelly, a member of Southern’s executive board, said the turnout was greater than she expected. It was so great, that in fact, members had to go out and get more food. She said the NAACP decided to have a laid-back event to show students that the organization does more than just have hard discussions.
The group and event attendees gathered for a group photo, and posed with their hands up as a tribute to Michael Brown who was shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson, Mo.
