Get ready to shake it like a red nose at graduation this semester as Sage The Gemini, Rap artist and this year’s spring performer, is set to be the guest speaker for the Undergraduate class of 2014. “It’s an honor,” said Gemini. “I have never spoken at a graduation but I’m confident that I will inspire the crowd and send the students off in a memorable way.”

President Papazian said she thinks Sage the Gemini is someone who can relate to students and is fit to speak to them before they embark on a new chapter in their lives. “Last year we had Jerry Greenfield, who is the co-founder of Ben & Jerry’s, speak at graduation and students loved it,” said Papazian. “This year we tried to pick someone who personified the new direction that SCSU is trying to move in.”

Papazian said when the school is considering who the next speaker at graduation will be, they try to find candidates who represent what the university stands for and are capable of inspiring the graduating class to do great things in the future.

“I like to think that at each one of my shows I inspire the crowd so I’m not really nervous to speak at the graduation,” said Gemini. “I’ve only heard great things about Southern and my sources say they like to have a good time so I am sure that day will be memorable.”

Michael Davis, junior communications major, said he was shocked to hear Sage the Gemini would be the guest speaker at his older brother’s graduation, but he is familiar with some of his music. “It was funny to me initially,” said Davis. “I’m used to hearing his music while I’m at a get together with friends or at a party. I want to see what words he will have for the class of 2014.” Davis said he doubts SCSU would hire someone who was incapable of doing the job, but he is still anxious to hear what the California rapper has to say.

Michelle Lopez, senior chemistry major, said she isn’t too thrilled to have a rapper as the guest speaker at her graduation and she is disappointed. “This is definitely not who I expected to speak at my graduation ceremony,” said Lopez. “I am familiar with his music, but I don’t see how it pertains to what I want to do after I graduate. This isn’t the first time I don’t agree with a decision made by SCSU so I guess we will see how it all plays out in May.”

Lopez said she is curious to know if Sage the Gemini will be performing at graduation. “My grandma and mom will be there watching me walk the stage so I can’t even imagine what their reactions to his music would be,” said Lopez. “I am hoping for the best but I really can’t imagine what kind of speech he is going to give.”

May 16 is the day undergraduate students will walk the stage in the Webster Bank Arena on Main Street in Bridgeport. Daniel Barnes, senior music major, said he doesn’t really care who the speaker at graduation is as long as he’s graduating. “My main concern is actually graduating,” said Barnes. “I didn’t anticipate having Sage the Gemini as our guest speaker at all, but it is what it is. It would have been cool to get free Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, but I am more thankful that I am actually graduating on time and am moving on to the next phase in my life more than anything.
