Emmy’s Fashion: yay or nay?

Caitlin WilliamsonSpecial to the Southern News

Stars gathered in anticipation for the announcements of who would be receiving an Emmy, but any fashion buff knows the real excitement begins before the show even starts. The carpet was drenched in couture, elegant, and chic evening wear for the recent award ceremony. With ravishing colors welcoming fall with a final wave to summer trends, some celebrities really knocked this one out.

It would be almost impossible to put Sofia Vergara in something and have her not completely blow the audience away with her natural beauty as well as her Eve-like figure. This year she wore Vera Wang in a gorgeous bold red with the cut of the dress tracing every Columbian curve. Hairstyle was simple to allow the dress to speak on it’s own, but she spiced things up with diamond and emerald earrings to make the simple makeup choice pop. After “Modern Family” won two Emmys, Sofia was doing everything just right that night.

Another favorite celebrity style was Anna Gunn, from AMC, “Breaking Bad.” Stunning for 45 years old, Anna went with a simply colored two-tone dress, black lace strapless top with a soft pink gown hugging her shape, with a mermaid-esc bottom trim. Rocking Romona Keveza, Anna put her working mom wardrobe for “Breaking Bad” to rest for one night to accept her Emmy for best supporting actress in a drama series. Easy with the accessories, and leaving the neckline be, Anna was breathtaking.

Number one Emmy look this season would have to go to “Insidious” star, Rose Byrne. The “not so Emmy” look Byrne went for was absolutely worth the risk! With a simple two-piece tight fit salmon toned Calvin Klein dress, there was no room for imperfections. Luckily for Rose, with her rock star body and jaw dropping features she was able to pull this look off effortlessly. The last chance to be able to wear a tone for the rest of our upcoming fall and winter seasons, Rose really gave justice to the summer favorite color.

We can’t leave out our trend setting males of the night. Another “Breaking Bad” star, Aaron Paul, knocked out the other suit and ties with his sleek navy blue tuxedo trimmed with black lining and a bow tie to match. His Pinkman, white boy gone hood, look was out trumped with this fresh and modern look.

With every outstanding look, a few looks gone wrong are sure to follow. The most surprising on this list would be fashion icon, Heidi Klum. With her metallic-y red neck brace and skin tight gown. Unfortunately, there were just one too many metallic glitter patterns on this dress. Maybe Klum should take a tip or two from her contestants on her hit reality contest, “Project Runway.”

The worst dressed would have to be awarded to Lena Dunham with her oversized turquoise colored gown with black trimming and rose petal designs dressed throughout randomly. If the gown wasn’t bad enough, the complete abandonment of accessories was a complete no-go. An attempted statement went south when Dunham’s make up stylist decided to go extremely heavy on the eyes with a vibrant greenish turquoise planted between her brows.

Award ceremonies bring out all forms of style, unexpected winnings, and famous speeches. The Emmy’s capped off another great award show, and gives us fashion lovers a few new looks to pick apart.
