The dark side of Chris Brown

By Solé Scott

Editor-in-Chief

I do not like Chris Brown and his abusive, stalking persona that everyone seems to turn a blind eye to.

I recently saw that Brown will be going on tour with Usher, titled “Raymond and Brown.” My eyes immediately rolled to the back of my head.

Usher co-headlining with a controversial figure like Brown puts a bitter taste in my mouth, and recently, he praised Sean “Diddy” Combs.

My deep disdain for Brown started in 2009 when I was at Walmart in the shopping cart with my mother. I saw a magazine cover with a battered Rihanna on display that still traumatizes me to this day.

I am aware that Brown apologized not only to Rihanna but to the whole world.

However, abuse is abuse to me, and as someone who has witnessed it, it is never just one time.

Since that incident, Brown has made troubling headlines for stalking and violence. He stalked his ex-girlfriend Karrueche Tran to the point that she needed a five-year restraining order that was granted in 2017.

In court, Tran alleged that Brown would send threatening text messages to her during the course of their tumultuous relationship.

“B—- I will beat the s— out of you,” Brown said in a text. “I promise you, I will make your life hell.”

That level of intimidation is not something that can or should be condoned.

Additionally, he has a long list of sexual assault allegations that have stemmed from at least 2017, which further adds to a pattern that is difficult to ignore.

In May of 2025, he was arrested in England for the assault of a bouncer at a club in 2023. The bouncer was hit with a tequila bottle, and a trial has been scheduled for October of this year.

Every time I hear his voice on the radio, I instantly turn it off without hesitation.

This is my firm stance, as I do not believe you can separate the art from the artist.

His loyal fanbase is similar to parasocial fandoms such as Nicki Minaj’s fanbase because they staunchly support his career even with the mountain of concerning incidents that have piled up in the last 17 years.

I cast shame on people making excuses for that 36-year-old man. There is no way that someone with a long rap sheet of abuse can be rehabilitated for society.

Brown is a talented artist that unfortunately has an extensive history of violence.

No amount of talent should excuse a repeated pattern of harmful behavior, yet the public continues to make exceptions, and I cannot help but wonder when he will be held accountable.
