Daredevil Season 2 Preview

Last year, the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen took stage on Netflix. Marvel’s Netflix production, “Daredevil,” showed not only that Netflix could hold its own as a production company, but also how well of a job they could do.

The first season of “Daredevil” detailed the story of blind attorney Matt Murdock and his partner Foggy Nelson who opened up their own defense firm in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan. Murdock, after being in an accident where chemicals made him blind, gained the unique ability to see the world similar to echolocation. With this new ability combined with a strong sense of justice and the dawning age of Superheroes in his world, Murdock set out as a vigilante to end crime in Hell’s Kitchen as the Daredevil.

While this was the first season, which garnered a 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, a year has passed and the second season is about to be released on March 18. In regards to the exact details of the second season of the show, not much has been revealed. One question left unanswered is whether or not Fisk, The Kingpin and last season’s main enemy, will show up in the second season. All that is known is that there are two new characters who are being introduced: The Punisher, and Elektra.

Now, devoted comic fans will recognize those names because they are staples in the Marvel Comic Universe and had their own movies in the early 2000’s. However, unlike the original media portrayals, The Punisher will be played by Jon Bernthal, who played Shane from the Walking dead, and Elektra will be portrayed by French actress Elodie Yung.

In the comics, Frank Castle is a man with a military background who is brought into an ultra violent vigilante spree after the death of his loved ones. Earning the name “The Punisher”, Castle works to take revenge on those who wronged him, and destroy criminals who would harm others. That being said, all that we know of for season two for “Daredevil” in regards to The Punisher is that he will be the antithesis to Daredevil, and the two will face off in the show.

This has been echoed in the trailers which has showed Daredevil chained up on a chimney, and combined with promotion posters which show The Punisher standing over a beaten Daredevil and holding his bloodied mask. It seems as though season two will feature these two vigilantes conflicting in approach and mission as Daredevil wants to keep the people safe, and The Punisher wants to eradicate the evil in the city.

However, the arrival of the second new character, Elektra, has been left a mystery as to her role in the show. In the comics she is a former love of Matt Murdock’s and winds up clashing with him when they are both adults, but there have only been promotional images of Elodie Yung wielding Elektra’s classic dual sai.

In a surprise announcement, a promotional picture was released which showed a fully-suited daredevil fighting off what appeared to be a group of ninjas. In the first season, the character of Stick, Murdock’s blind mentor, was introduced and showed a hidden world of ninja-like warriors who were operating in the shadows. Concurrently, the in-comic ninja organization “The Hand” was brought up, and it appears they will also be an antagonistic factor in the new season.

When it comes down to it, how the story will play out between Daredevil, Elektra, The Punisher, and The Hand is a mystery. But, on March 18 it will be readily available on Netflix for viewing and bingeing.
