Southern Connecticut State University gymnastics team member Chelcie Rosborough has taken delight in the sport since childhood.

“I started when I was five years old and have continued ever since then,” Rosborough said.

The junior said that in that time she has always had a fondness though with that adoration came the usual highs and lows many athletes face, but Southern had a big part in reigniting her appreciation for gymnastics.

“I’ve always loved it but of course I’ve had my ups and downs but coming to college I re-found my passion for it.”

Rosborough who is originally from Maryland, and attended Indian Creek High School, competed at the club level with Docksiders Gymnastics Inc.

During her time with Docksiders, Rosborough excelled, including being a level 10 state qualifier and champion in 2011. In 2009 Rosborough was also a State qualifier as well as a Regional qualifier, and All-Around Champion. Also in 2009, Rosborough made it to the level nine Eastern Championship, which she said was one of her most memorable moments in gymnastics.

“My sophomore year of high school I did really well and I ended up going to the eastern Nationals, so that was great,” Rosborough said.

In her freshman season here at Southern, Rosborough had strong showings including fourth on the beam with a 9.55 against West Chester and a second place finish against Brown on the beam where she scored a 9.425.

Rosborough said that her first season with the Owls was quite memorable to her, where she found enjoyment and knowledge.

“Here at Southern I remember my freshman year, it was a lot of fun because everything was new to me,” Rosborough said, “it was a lot of great experiences and I learned a lot along the way.”

In her sophomore season, Rosborough had a strong year as well. She was recorded a 9.6 on the floor exercise at the ECAC Championships, qualified for USAG Nationals, and was named a USAG Scholar-Athlete.

This season has seen Rosborough start off strong. She was recently named the Gymnast of the Week by the ECAC and an Athlete of the Week by the Southern Athletic department. In the Cornell Big Red meet, Rosborough secured a share of the top spot for the beam with a score of 9.600, and a third place finish in the floor exercise with a 9.700 which helped the Owls finish in second in the event.

Looking forward, Rosborough said the Owls main goal is to qualify for USAG Nationals, but to also continue to mature as a team.

“As a team our main goal is to make it to Nationals, but I think if we continue to grow each and every meet, I think that would be great too, because we would see some improvement.”

In addition to helping the team flourish Rosborough also has hopes for her individual performance as the season rolls on, and said she has a lot to prove.

“Individually, I hope to make it to Nationals again and have a better performance than I did last year,” she said. “Because I feel like I have a lot to prove from last year.”

As for what Rosborough’s future holds, she said as of right now, she hopes she will be able to obtain a graphic design job, but that the top priority is to be content.

“I hope to get a job in the graphic design industry,” Rosborough said, “well my main goal is to be happy.”
