Preparing for graduation your senior year

Jennifer Hoffer – Sports Editor

If you’re a senior, welcome to what is simultaneously the best and worst thing that will ever happen to you: the end of college. The last semester of college is a downward spiral of emotions but so amazing at the same time. It’s basically the definition of bittersweet.

It’s like everyone in your class shares an unspoken agreement to make this the craziest five months ever and create memories that will last long after you leave this town and each other.

Depending on your life plan, entering the home stretch of college can hold different significance. For some it’s the last semester of school EVER. For others, it’s the last step between you and graduate school. It’s a weird time. It’s a time where you’re trying to enjoy the present but more often than not you find yourself worrying about the future and what awaits you.

So what do I do for the last five months here? Just relax and enjoy the ride. Enjoy the last few months you have here with your professors and friends.

Think about what’s ahead of you. The new chapter you are about to embark on. If there’s anything I learned about myself the past 21 years of my life already is that you can’t take life for granted. But most importantly you can’t live in the past; you have to move on. Life doesn’t stop happening. So you just have to enjoy the ride while you’re on it. Just don’t stress out about finding a job, but make sure you’re actively looking. It’s your move to make. The ball is in your hands now. You’ve prepared years for this moment. And you’ve been prepared well. Don’t sell yourself short. Don’t think about the rejections you may get. Just do all you can to find a job. And don’t forget to use resources your college offers while you still have them.

For me, there is no way to prepare for the “what if” in life. Take control of what you can influence.

This is your last semester of college. Graduation will come fast. Enjoy your experience while it lasts. Be proud and happy about what you have accomplished.

So a few things that you can do to enjoy your last few months as an undergrad are doing things that you wouldn’t think twice about doing.

College is a time in your life unlike any other, especially your last semester. After graduation you’ll be hit with a whole new reality. You’ll be enthralled in the world of responsibility; use the time to be kind of selfish. Do things for yourself. Get your friends and make a bucket-list together on things to do this semester.

Go take a road trip. Make your last semester a journey. A college road trip will undoubtedly leave you with memories and stories to tell.

While you’re out there go to some big event or concert. Enjoy this time!

The quarter-life crisis is real; ask any other member of the millennial generation who’s already entered the workforce. Be proactive and remember to rely on your resources at hand. You did it; you’re about to finish college. Don’t let it pass without a little celebration.

I think my most important thing to remember throughout this college life, is that who you are when you’re 21 is not necessarily who you are going to be next year or in five years. People change, they grow and become different people. Don’t be hung up on what’s happened in the past. It’s done, over with.

Just like you’ve grown since freshman year, you’re going to keep growing. Experience changes you; in a good way. You meet new people, explore new places, and create new memories for yourself along the way. Graduating college is just another small step in growing. You’ll eventually get to where you want to be. Take the world by the reins; you be the leader.
