Things to do this winter season to stay busy

Finals are almost over, and that means that we are one step closer to winter break. This means that for almost a month there is no homework and no noisy neighbors keeping you up until 2 a.m. when you have an exam first thing in the morning.  Break is the time to put yourself in a full mental rehabilitation after all the hard work you put into this fall semester.

Here are some ideas that I think would be fun to do this winter break.

Catch up on Netflix. Over these last few weeks I have been very laxed with my shows. I am behind on almost every show that I watch and winter break is the perfect time to catch up on them. All you would need is some hot chocolate, a comfy sofa, plenty of blankets, and Netflix to be fully entertained for a day (or days).

Find out what’s going on in the world. Between what has been going on in New Haven lately with the gunmen on both Yale and UNH’s campuses, this is the time to read up on past events in the news and read what’s been going on in the world. There are lots of major headlines that could have been missed while you were studying for finals. Read up on them to stay informed.

Learn how to cook something new. College is flying by for most of us and that means that you are one step closer to living on your own. Get creative with the food that you learn how to cook because once you’re out on your own, cooking can sometimes not be as much fun (or as good) as mom makes. Keep it simple, easy, and affordable – that way you can make in either in your dorm room or in your own apartment.

Road trip. Just get out of town for a few days. You can go to a museum or go and visit friends – whichever you choose make it fun. This break is your time to relax and de-stress, so take advantage of that. Get your friends, whether they be from back home whom you don’t get to see very often or your school friends, just get in the car and drive until you find something exciting to do.

Read a book. As an English major I enjoy reading both in and out of class. During the winter and summer breaks I find that this is the best time to catch up on that stack of books that have been sitting on your floor waiting to be read. There is no better time than over winter break to read a book for your own personal enjoyment, so why not pick up a book and read?

Look for scholarships/internships. If you are early in your undergrad I would suggest that you look into scholarships that would either pertain to the up and coming spring semester or next fall. There is no hurt in seeing what is out there and available to help you pay for school. If you are late in your undergrad, as I am, I would suggest you look into internships. Yes, this is another reminder that graduation is fast approaching however it’s better to be ahead rather than have no internship next summer.

Whichever of these activities you decided to do, I hope you enjoy it! Kick back and relax this winter break. There is going to be plenty of time this coming spring semester to freak out over grades and whatever else is going on. Do as little or as much as you want to, take this time to focus on you and getting back to not having stresses for a short time.
