Falling in love in college

Nicole Dellolio – Opinions Editor

We’ve all heard the expression “Never fall in love at the Jersey Shore” but does the same expression apply towards falling in love in college?  Movies such as “American Pie” and “Legally Blonde” help put the idea into our minds that college is all about partying, staying up late, and hooking up with random people, but for most of us these activities are far from what we do as college students.  With all of these movies and the media portraying different aspects of college life, does that mean that having a serious relationship while in college is a bad thing that you will regret for the rest of your life?

My answer is absolutely no.  By the time that college rolls around people are given more freedom than they have probably had throughout their entire lives.  The first reaction for some people is to go out and immediately do all of the things that they weren’t allowed to do in high school, but for others it’s finally their time to set goals for themselves and concentrate on the real reason that they decided to go to college.

With all of this new freedom a lot of people say that the last thing that they want to do while in college is to get tied down to one person; but in my opinion there are a lot of pros to having a serious relationship in college.  I came into college with a boyfriend, and now I am a senior still with the same person.  The past four years have been hectic with a constant work and school load, but somehow we’ve managed to stay together through our busy schedules.

Love

One of the positive aspects of falling in love with college is constantly having a support system that understands exactly what you are going through because they are going through it too.

Being in college is one of the most stressful times of a person’s life so having somebody support everything that you do is a huge part of pushing yourself to be successful and getting through your classes.

This isn’t limited to just being in a romantic relationship, but while you’re in college you should make the most out of the experience and get out there and meet people while you have the chance.  Since SCSU is located in New Haven, students have the opportunity to explore the city and learn more about people from different cultures and backgrounds.

Making the decision about whether or not to have a serious relationship in college is a personal preference, but there is nothing wrong with choosing to do so.  It’s also very common for people in college to date around to figure out what kind of people they are most interested in and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that!  So next time you’re out with your friends and somebody asks you out on a nice romantic date, do yourself a favor and accept the offer.
