ProCon’s latest movie night preps students for Halloween

Screams, snacks, and SCSU students packed the Adanti Student Center Theater for the school’s showing of the 2013 horror film, “The Conjuring.”

Maggie MacDonald, a sophomore theatre major at SCSU, said she saw the movie prior to the showing on Oct. 22 in the Student Center and thought it was very scary.

“I watched it alone in our room once,” said MacDonald. “It was like 11 or 12 o’clock at night and I came out of my room into our hallway, which is really long and dark. I had to run to the bathroom. It was the scariest thing in the world.”

Programs Council (ProCon) organized the event and provided snacks for students to enjoy while watching the film as well. Students who showed up early enough enjoyed free candy, popcorn, and juice. According to the ProCon staff, the more students that attend events like this, the better the events will be and the wider variety of snacks they will be able to provide.

“Well I go home on the weekends,” said Michelle Purcell, a sophomore here at SCSU. “But if I heard about more events like this or more good movies showing I would definitely stay more.”

When students of SCSU sat down to watch the horror film they also shared a few laughs and screams in the process.

“I thought the movie was pretty good, pretty scary,” said Mike Castro, a junior and nursing major at SCSU. “I jumped a few times but I didn’t scream at all but overall it was definitely a good movie.”

Sarah Lauture, a junior communications major at SCSU, and Ashlee Jaiman, a junior public health major, both agreed the movie was scary and recommend that students come out to events like this because its free and gives students something to on campus with their friends.

“I enjoyed seeing my friend’s reactions,” said Lauture. “It was my second time seeing this movie and I still jumped so it was nice.”

“It was really scary,” said Jaiman. “I had to cover my face for like half of the movie so I kind of missed some parts.”

Sasha James, a sophomore elementary education major, said she enjoyed the film as well and would like to see more events or films like this on campus because it brings together residents with commuters.

Both James and Jaiman suggested ProCon continue to show themed movies that correspond with the holidays that are coming up. For another Halloween movie, James suggested the film “Hocus Pocus” to be played for students to enjoy.

“The newer the movies they show, the more that I’d come,” said MacDonald. “Movies on campus are just more convenient because I don’t always have time to go out to the movies because of school and working with the Crescent Players. More events like this might make students more inclined to stay on the weekends.”

For students who enjoy watching movies from the comfort of their own rooms, the Reslife Cinema is available on channel 918 on the dorm TVs.  According to the school’s website, the Reslife Cinema is a sponsored program run through the Residence Hall Association (RHA). Movies such as “42,” “Thirteen Ghosts,” and “Insidious” are all available for residents to watch anytime.

James also said she believes events like this definitely enhance school pride among students.

“The students who didn’t come missed out on getting scared,” said Castro. “And getting into the Halloween spirit.”
