Plastic Cup Boyz visit SCSU and leave students in stitches

The three comics that performed in front of the Southern audience brought their own unique flare that sparked up positive energy in the room and provided students in attendance with a laugh before midterms.

“I couldn’t stop laughing,” said Raysa Florentino, senior psychology major at SCSU. “I’m glad that I came because all of the comedians were hilarious.”

SCSU students were wrapped up their Homecoming week with a visit from Kevin Hart’s: Plastic Cup Boyz, who had the Lyman Center filled with student’s laughter for most of Saturday night.

“Students should attend campus events like this because you get to have a lot fun and actually enjoy college,” said Dajauna Delvalle, junior social work major at SCSU. “It’s not all bookwork.”

“Nights like tonight are a getaway for me,” said Chris Aly, junior engineering major at SCSU. “Especially now that midterms are going on and coming up for everybody, it’s always cool to just get away and enjoy yourself.”

The three comedians all shared funny anecdotes about their experiences doing comedy and even poked fun at each other, but also made it a point to convey the importance of students practicing safe sex.

Na’im Lynn, the last of the three comedians to perform, made sure that he kept the audience engaged throughout his entire set and even called up six students from the audience to join him on stage as a part of a segment. The audience shared a laugh while he had the six students on stage share their best pick-up lines with each other, all for the prize of $40. Students laughed hard when Lynn talked about a student at a past performance mistaking his name for, “Na I’m Lying” and also when a person commented on one of his YouTube videos saying that he resembled a “cat clock.”

“I thought Na’im Lynn was too funny,” said Aly. “I liked how he got the whole crowd involved and brought students on stage. It was definitely one of the funniest parts of the show to me.”

LaVar Walker, the opening act for the Plastic Cup Boyz, did a nice job warming up the crowd by talking about his relationship with his wife and showing the comical aspects of being an older comedian.

“I laughed so hard when he [Walker] was talking about how his wife made fun of his outfit before he came to the show,” said Florentino. “I thought it was funny how he laughed at himself for being the opener for Kevin Hart’s openers too.”

Will “Spank” Horton, the second comedian to perform, also made the crowd laugh hard while he joked about his college experiences and how he enjoyed being at SCSU over schools that he had visited in the past.

The students and other audience members that attended the show were kept on their toes as the comedians targeted a few people for leaving their seats during their performances. The Plastic Cup Boyz closed out Homecoming week for Southern on a high note and gave students who missed the show a reason to come next year.

“I think anyone who missed the show missed out,” said freshman Carmen Roman. “It was a free show and I thought the comedians were pretty funny.”

“This was the most fun that I’ve had at Homecoming yet,” said Aly. “I really liked the pep rally this year and the comedy show was a great close to end Homecoming. I’m curious to see what next year will be like.”
