2013 MTV Movie Awards Recap

Jamila Young – Staff Writer

Sunday night the 2013 MTV Awards aired, hosted by rising actress Rebel Wilson from movies such as “Bridesmaids” and “Pitch Perfect.”

The show began with a Pitch Perfect sing off montage, which Wilson kicked off by singing a little bit of “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus. To my surprise Wilson doesn’t have a bad voice.

I think that Wilson is funny and had some good jokes throughout the show, but I was feeling bad for her because at the start of the show when she would tell a joke, people wouldn’t start clapping for her right away, it seemed like it took them a while or they were just doing it because it was her first time hosting.

The first award of the night went to Bradley Cooper for Best Male Performance, for “Silver Linings Playbook.”

Jamie Foxx and Samuel L. Jackson won for best WTF Moment for Django Unchained. Foxx was wearing a black t-shirt with Trayvon Martin’s picture in the middle of it, surrounded by the pictures of the deceased from the Newtown shooting. I was glad to see that he was showing that he cares.

Emma Watson took home the Trailblazer Award, but before she accepted her award, a video message from actor Jonah Hill was played, and he announced that he and Watson will be starring in the upcoming “50 Shades of Grey” movie.

Nine year-old-young actress, Quvenzhané Wallis was in the audience. I just wondered if the people at MTV told Wilson that Wallis would be there, because a lot of her jokes were very sexual, but I’m glad Wilson didn’t have to hold back on her jokes, because they were funny.

Host Rebel WIlson won the award for Breakthrough Performance, for her role in “Pitch Perfect,” and ironically as she walked out to accept her award Drake’s “Started from the Bottom” played in the background. Her movie “Pitch Perfect” won for Best Musical Moment too.

The show went a little too far when actors Seth Rogen, Danny McBride, and Zac Efron presented Taylor Lautner with the Best Shirtless Performance Award. Rogen said that if there was a Best Bottomless Award, he would win, and then he and McBride pulled their pants down and revealed themselves with fake hair on Rogen, and metal underwear with a lock on it, on McBride. The camera then panned to Quvenzhané Wallis, where her mother was turning her head away from them.

There were performances from Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and Selena Gomez. Macklemore & Lewis put on a good show, and got really hyped and into it. Macklemore went off stage at one point and walked around the audience for a little, and even got into the crowd and was being held up by them. Gomez wasn’t as good though. The performance was okay, but her singing could’ve been much better. She performed her new song, “Come and get it,” which I had heard a week before, and though I like it, she sounded really bad performing it live on the show. It sounded like a bad American Idol audition. It was “too live” for me; you could hear an echo in her voice, and you could hear her panting at the end of her performance. I think it might’ve helped a lot if she had the song playing in the background.

The show ended when Brad Pitt presented the cast of Marvel’s The Avengers, with the Movie of the Year award. The best thing about the show to me was watching Rebel Wilson host. I hope next year actress Melissa Mccarthy hosts because she is very funny.
