Dear Dr. Strangelove,
My best friend of over 14 years has been seeing this girl for about six months. I know he’s really into her (and he’s never liked a girl this much), but the other day I found out that his girl was hooking up with a kid from the gym. This kid was my manager. I just got hired at my job, and I don’t want to mess it up. If it gets back to him that the secret is out, he’ll know it was me because his buddy is the one who told me. Even though it’s only part time, I can’t lose this position, but I can’t let my bud get screwed. Now what?
Dear Confused Confidant,
The first thing to do is figure out what is more important to you. Unless there is some miracle way you can slip the information to your friend without your manager knowing, you’re going to have to pick a sacrifice (Hey, you could always write an anonymous letter or blackmail the girl). Maybe if you tell someone else it will get back to your friend, then the heat is off you. However, if your friend finds out you knew, that could be the end of it. I would start looking for other jobs if I were you. It sounds to me like this won’t be the last of the issues, and a friendship is more important than a part-time job.
