Students participate in ‘The Big Event’ to better the New Haven community

Ryan Morgan, News Editor:

Southern students spent last Saturday volunteering their time at over 15 locations in the New Haven area.

Stefan Keller, who assisted in organizing the day, said the goal was to get over 500 volunteers to work for five hours, totaling over 100 days of community service. While Keller said that goal was not met, they still received mostly positive feedback.

“We got some thank you emails saying they really appreciated us being there,” said Keller.

This was the fourth annual Big Event at Southern, an initiative that mirrors a similar event at Texas A&M University.

“I think the big event is important because it gives students a great opportunity to come together and work as a whole, and of course serve,” said Keller. “It encourages people to do service and give back to the community around Southern.”
