Southern Style: The Oscars best and worst dressed list

Steve Miller, Opinions Editor-

Last Sunday night marked the 83rd annual Oscars and subsequently the 83rd time we viewers sit back eagerly wait to praise and berate this year’s best and worst dressed on the red carpet!

Being one of the year’s most notable award ceremonies, the Oscars are prime real estate for stars and designers to show the world their sense of style and design aesthetic. We all know how a dress can either make or break a star’s fashion taste in the eyes of those watching—Bjork’s swan dress, anyone?

I hope everyone else had their Oscar goggles on, which for me includes a large order of lo mein and a box of Franzia—classy, I know. In all seriousness though, let’s go all Joan Rivers and see who did it right and who should have thought twice before stepping out of those limo doors.

The Best

While her musical performance may have fallen flat, the award-winning actress shined on the red carpet in a stunning custom-made Calvin Klein column gown and gold Brian Atwood “Martina” pumps. The simple silhouette and descending bust line perfectly complemented Paltrow’s figure, along with her choice of a straight parted down the middle hair style that further emphasized her gown’s sparkle. But it was her accessories that really sealed the deal; eye catching multi-colored earrings, ring and brooch from Louis Vuitton’s L’Ame du Voyage collection, the perfect icing on the top of an Oscar best-dressed look.

From her emerald green Vera Wang gown at the Golden Globes to her fiery red Alexander McQueen chiffon dress at the SAG Awards, the 27-year-old actress has not missed a style beat at this year’s award ceremony circuit. At this year’s Oscars, Mila did not disappoint wearing a beautiful lavender Elie Saab gown from the designer’s 2011 Haute Couture Spring 2011 Collection. Even her simple makeup and choice of hair syle, a simple loose bun, fit perfectly with the whole look. From the color choice, the tiered lace detail and the silhouette Kunis appeared to effortlessly embody the perfect example of true romance.

The Worst

While I applauded Melissa Leo for her amazing performance in “The Fighter” and her willingness to take a chance when it comes to what she wears, her custom-made Marc Bouwer dress at this year’s Oscars looked more like her body was attacked by a giant killer doily. The silhouette of the gown looked too constricting and the high collar and fitted sleeves made Mrs. Leo look like she was uncomfortable and unable to breathe. By trying to mix and match two styles that do not go unless paired perfectly, the metallic underlay and lace pattern looked un-cohesive. Great acting Melissa, but at next year’s Oscars be sure to bring your fashion game face to match your talent.

She might be the Material Girl, but her bum baring outfit at this year’s Oscars was more inappropriate than commanding. The 52-year-old pop legend wore a Francesco Scognamiglio black leotard that left little to the imagination, but coming from the woman who released her own sex book, I suppose some could argue her choice of dress exuded some degree of modesty. In an attempt to “cover up,” Mrs. M chose a floor-length black lace overlay and fur vest. I don’t know if she was going for the desperate housewife in a final attempt to seduce her unresponsive husband look, but the whole outfit looked tasteless and unfit for the Oscars.
