After a long and stressful couple of weeks spent studying and taking midterm exams, students said that they wanted to relax and take their minds off all the academic pressure they have been facing.

Nursing major Hailey DeNucci, a sophomore, is the president of the 2027 class and said that she wanted to give students at the university the opportunity to recuperate after having midterms.

“School is so stressful, and I think students just need to give their brains a break for a bit,” DeNucci said. “This event can help with developing social skills when students are interacting with each other.”

DeNucci said that she and the class representatives started planning this Halloween-inspired event about a month ago because she anticipated the pressure that midterms would bring to her and her class.

“I think a lot of us are so busy with extracurriculars and classes that we don’t have any time to meet the other people in our class who are dealing with the same stress,” DeNucci said. “I’m really glad that I got to get to know other people who I don’t see or interact with on a daily basis.”

At the event, students were able to engage in a group game of Mario Kart on a Nintendo Switch, eat pizza and receive goodie bags filled with candy.

Computer science major Gerryiki Williams, a sophomore, is the secretary for his class and said that he wanted to do something fun to help students after taking midterm exams.

“This is something to get students out of their rooms, make new friends and eat some free food,” Williams said.

Nursing major Finn DeMott, a sophomore, came to the event to support his classmates and his friends who were hosting it. He said that his favorite part was eating the candy.

“This makes me feel reminiscent of the times I went trick-or-treating when I was younger,” DeMott said. “It really builds the Halloween spirit seeing everyone dressed up in costumes and having fun.”

DeMott attended the event with social work major Brooke Yezik, a sophomore. She said that she originally came to the event to encourage her friends who were hosting but ended up enjoying the free food and drinks more.

“This kind of event just brings people together in a place where they feel that they can be themselves,” Yezik said.

The class of 2027 also had a Halloween costume contest with a prize at their event. The two winners were each awarded a $75 Amazon gift card.

One of the winners was communication major Rachel Gregory, a sophomore. She dressed up as Heather Duke from ‘Heathers: The Musical’ and said that she was not expecting to win.

“I feel so honored and excited to have won because my friend and I have been planning these costumes for months,” Gregory said. “It’s so cool to have won this contest because I have never even done something like this before.”
