After a 2-year hiatus, Doja Cat makes a triumphant return with a new album and controversial alter ego named Scarlet.
The album was released on Friday, Sept. 22, 2023.
10’s across the board for this album that had a banger rollout. Doja Cat is definitely not a one-trick pony.
Cat’s original creativity has separated her from her peers, and she is on the verge of legendary status.
Granted her attitude towards her fans was rude and not cute, yet her artistry still eats whether you like her or not.
She is a perfect example of separating the art from the artist.
This past month she broke Spotify’s record for female rapper with the most monthly listeners clocking in at 70 million people.
That is an amazing accomplishment for an individual who has been cancelled according to the social media platform X.
The project consists of 17 songs that have no skips.
Album opens with the Bangor ‘Paint The Town Red’ which samples Dionne Warwick’s ‘Walk On By.’
Ultimate Favorite songs on this album are ‘Attention,’ ‘Paint The Town Red,’ ‘Balut,’ ‘Go Off,’ ‘Skull And Bones,’ ‘Can’t Wait’ and ‘Agora Hills.’
Go watch ‘Demons’ and ‘Paint The Town Red’ music videos and see the constant reference to Satan.
Essentially, she is trolling the audience due to accusations of selling her soul and getting satanic tattoos.
That is why this new era is entertaining because Cat is feeding off the conspiracies and wrecking the internet in the process.
This new album and the Planet Her album are not comparable because Scarlet is pure rap while planet Her was pop.
As a Doja Cat fan since her iconic “Mooo!” song that dropped in the summer of 2018. Her artistry has constantly evolved.
She no longer sings/raps bubblegum pop songs met for a TikTok audience. Now she is focused on lyricism.
This album is a strong contender for being the best release of the year.
Stats wise this album might not sell or have high streams due to Cat’s grotesque behavior online in recent months.
Her continuous mean girl energy towards fans has left a sour taste in their mouths to the point that supporters have jumped ship from her fan base.
For instance, Cat had an online scuffle with several fan accounts due to her annoyance of supporters naming themselves in the likes of Beyoncé’s Beyhive, Nicki Minaj Barbz and Blackpink Blinks which led to multiple deactivations across social media.
Cat maybe over the public’s entitlement and invasion of privacy of her life, which is evident in the song ‘Attention.’
“Look at me, look at me, you lookin?,” Cat said.
Whether her disdain for her fans dampens her position on the Billboard charts, she still is undeniably talented.
Her perplexing rebrand seems to be a career killer yet may have the opposite effect.
Nonetheless this album eats and will be added to all music platform libraries. In the meantime, we will all wait to see what is next on the roller coaster ride of Doja Cat.
