The Walking Dead takeover Sunday nights

Dylan Haviland – Special to the Southern News

October is here and soon enough students everywhere at Southern Connecticut State University will suit up and prepare for Halloweens creeping weather.  As students zip up their fall sweaters though, survivors of a different sort will be racking up their zombie fighting equipment.

From Neff Hall to North Campus, student’s halls will soon echo with the choir of zombie smashing and Norman Reedus’s crossbow swishing through the air. The Walking Dead season five is back with a vengeance on AMC for a Sunday that will satisfy everyone’s zombie thrills and chills.

“I am so excited to see what the season will bring, the first and second season where great, the third and fourth not so much.  So I’m hoping the fifth one will bring excitement back to the viewers,” said SCSU Senior and Bio major Michelle Wituck.  “Honestly I started watching because my friends loved zombies and I started liking the show.  But it got to a point where I cared more for the characters instead of the actual show and only stayed for them.  I am hoping I can get back into the story.”

The second half of the fourth season was seen by some students and viewers to be quite dry and uneventful.  Asides from the dramatic cliff hanger leaving Rick and his group of survivors locked away at Terminus (Newest setting of the show).  There leaves much to be accomplished in this season.

“I definitely think there is a lot of hype to the new season,” said SCSU sophomore and geography major Steven Cardinal. “Especially since how Walking Dead is basically a road show ever since season one and after they lost the prison midway through four.  There is going to be a whole lot of surprises hidden in this season I bet.”

Of course what is a successful TV show without a cast of colorful characters?  Even if their colors are primarily composed of blood red.  Primarily, everyone’s favorite crossbow wielding zombie hunter Daryl Dixon, played by actor Norman Reedus.  Who has become the breakout star of The Walking Dead.

“I’m excited to see Daryl because ever since the start of season one he’s been my favorite character, Norman Reedus is such a talented actor,” said SCSU sophomore and special education major Caterina Poletti. “I love the vibe he gives off throughout the show by him being a free for all person and he doesn’t care what anyone thinks of him.”

Audiences are also thrilled to see the return of the fan favorite character Michonne, played by the talented actress Danai Gurira.  “Michonne, I am so excited about seeing her.  She is the true hero of The Walking Dead,” said Cardinal.” “Her independence and personality are just so awesome.  She just has that quality to her that she works so well with a team but also being able to work on her own, which I find so interesting.”

With the Governor long out of the picture there will soon be the need for a new villain to arise from the ashes.  Gareth, leader of the survivor settlement “Terminus” may soon fill those shoes.  “I feel like he’s a villain, but not the villain that everyone thinks will be the big bad one of season 5,” said Cardinal.  “We may find a bigger villain towards the end of the season however.  He is no Governor.”

For those who are behind the zombie phenomenon, all four seasons prior to the new one will be available on www.netflix.com.  Giving plenty of options for Netflix marathoners to prepare for the upcoming season five.
