Sex and the City: Still A Hit Among the Single Girls

‘Sex and the City’ ended in 2004, however its reruns are still constantly aired and watched by many people who were infants at the time of the show’s original run. In the 10 years since its finale aired, two movies and a prequel have been made. There are even rumors and desire for a third movie. The lines are constantly quoted, many online quizzes exist asking if you’re Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda or a Samantha, and because of the show, products such as the Carrie name necklace, the Cosmopolitan and the Manolo Blahnik shoes are extremely popular. Even though it’s been over 10 years since a new episode has aired, why is the show still so popular?

For many like myself, we can all relate to the problems that have been on the show. Whether it’s awkward first dates, insecurities with your current relationship, dealing with a breakup or owning being single, there is an episode of ‘Sex and the City’ that covers each of those topics and more. With the four unforgettable main characters to play those roles, the show continues to live on into the next generation.

‘Sex and the City’ isn’t about just sex. It’s about the Manhattan dating scene, the love for New York City as well, fashion and of course having the support system of your three closest friends. It mixes clichéd romantic movies with fashion and of course having a support system of fabulous friends by your side.

cityWhat makes the show truly unique is that the show’s main characters are all women. There’s Miranda, who’s the logical lawyer who strives to be independent, Samantha the spunky promiscuous one that isn’t afraid to tell you like it is and Charlotte, who is the preppy girl who wants so desperately to be married. Then there’s the narrator, the one and only Carrie Bradshaw who is known for two things-her high heels and her clever lines about her romantic endeavors. It’s safe to say that we all can relate to at least one of these characters that are featured on the show.

Through out each episode you see the women support each other through the ups and downs of relationships and in life. When Berger broke up with Carrie on a post-it note, the ladies were there for her to vent. The show is one of the first to show the importance of female friendships, other than ‘The Golden Girls,’ which makes it one  of the most watched shows when it’s girl’s night.

The show although controversial as you can imagine, changed the way that girls and women viewed themselves, and relationships. Women’s issues were now center stage for discussion, as well as current events, and issues you normally wouldn’t see on television. It ultimately changed the way people thought about the way women communicated and related. Sex was no longer a closeted issue in society, as well as other issues such as gay rights, and women’s rights in society.

Like many young women in my age demographic, I am a huge fan of ‘Sex and the City.’ I feel like I can personally relate to Carrie Bradshaw, and her uncertainty about life, love and her place in the world. She’s someone that we all can relate to, because she’s portrayed in a more human way than the rest of us. There’s something that’s so raw about her character, which makes the show truly unique.

‘Sex and the City’ mania isn’t going to go out of style, just as true friendship is. A show that combines love, friendship and fashion is truly something that will always remain to be in fashion for everyone young and old, exclamation point.
