How to overcome college obstacles

Natalie Barletta – Opinions Editor

Sometimes college can be a bit of a bumpy ride with plenty of things going in the wrong direction. Cars break down. Computers crash. We wake up late, and we lose things that we probably should not have lost. Life happens especially in college. Things won’t go your way, and you’re just having a bad day. So, how do you manage?

Sometimes you have to expect the unexpected, and be prepared for pretty much anything to happen. Sometimes that can be easy. Other times, it’s not.

Let’s just say that your computer crashes while you are  in the middle of writing your term paper which is due tomorrow. Naturally, you really didn’t expect that to happen to you. However, you can do many things to make this situation less stressful than it seems by having a backup plan.

For starters, you can keep a copy of all of your papers on a flash drive so that if this happens to you, then you can use another computer to finish the assignments. Another thing that you can do is use Google Drive, which is internet based. That way, if something were to happen to your personal computer, your paper will be still saved somewhere in the world, so you can still have access to it. And the best part? Google automatically saves whatever you’re writing so you won’t have to start from scratch, which we all know is not fun.

Some situations however don’t have an easy plan b. Whether it’s getting stuck in traffic, losing your wallet (which had your license/student ID/debit cards, etc. in it), or just forgetting to wake up on time for class; sometimes things don’t always have an easy plan of action. So, where do you go from there?

The first thing that you can do is take a deep breath and calm down. The worst thing that you can do in these sorts of situations is freak out because it only makes you even more stressed out. After taking a deep breath, call your credit card company to cancel the cards, listen to music to make the traffic jam a bit more enjoyable, or try to get to class as soon as you possibly  can. Sometimes these things just happen and there’s not much you can do about it sadly.

However, you can prevent these things from happening alarm by getting a louder alarm, always making sure that you know where your stuff is, making sure you have everything before you leave, and leaving early to take in account that you may be heading to Southern during rush hour. By taking preventive measures, the likelihood of that event happening again will be 10 times less likely.

At the end of the day, there’s something that each and every one of us needs to remember-this too shall pass. Whether it’s a bad day, a traffic jam, a lost student ID card, or waking up too late, remember that it’s not going to last forever. ID cards can be replaced, although they can be expensive (even though you’re really happy to at last get a halfway decent ID picture). Not every day is bad, just like not every day is going to be a good one.

Overcoming college obstacles is tricky and can be done if you all remember that one piece of advice. Maintaining a positive attitude no matter what life throws at you is important. And before you know it the day will come when you put on a black cap and gown, and you won’t be able to call yourself a college student anymore.
