Freshman Emma Farrel scored her first collegiate goal during the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team’s 5-1 loss to the Assumption Greyhounds. Senior Audrey Dolloff lead as goalie for Southern with Lauren Neilan as goalie for Assumption. Dolloff stopped 13 of the 18 shots on goal.

“I definitely felt we were prepared,” said Kelley Frassinelli, SCSU field hockey head coach. “Maybe a little less physically ready.”

She said the team looked heavy, as in they had a lot riding on them. “It looked like we were slumped carrying our own weight.”

In the first 35-minute half, Greyhounds opened with possession of the ball. They brought the ball up the field into Owls’ territory where the ball remained for most of the half. At the 3:30 mark, the Greyhounds fouled within the circle, causing an Owls defensive corner. At the whistle, they attempted to shoot at goal, but it was a pushed away.

Two minutes later was the second corner, which had a shot too wide of the goal and went out of bounds. 7:43 minutes into the game, Assumption scored their first goal with Maria Beatrice driving the ball into the inner left corner as Dolloff stepped out of the box. Meghan Sullivan followed suit in scoring for Assumption off of a five yard rebound pass, bringing the score to 2-0.

Following a timeout, SCSU gained possession of the ball, bringing it to the Assumption goal. Kristi Montemurro, number 25, shot twice back-to-back, but Neilan blocked both shots. Montemurro bought Southern their first penalty corner

She followed a corner play but Neilan kicked the ball out. Neilan also blocked her next two corner shots on goal.

Assumption intercepted the ball and brought it back down. Greyhound Belle Ives drove the ball, aiming towards the goal but was too wide. At 23:36, shot on goal but Dolloff deflected it.

Six minutes before the end of the first half, Allison Sheahan flicked the ball into goal after Dolloff stepped over it. The first half ended with a score of 3-0 in Assumption’s favor.

One minute into the start of the second half, a penalty corner was called on Farrel. Emily Allen, number 14, took the shot on goal but Neilan deflected it. Farrel recovered the ball from the Assumption goalie and scored not only Southern’s first goal of the game, but her first college career goal. Montemurro assisted Farrel’s shot, bringing the score to 3-1 at 36:05.

Assumption regained control of the ball. A penalty corner was called on their player, Taylor Chace, who then passed the ball to Sarah Frahm for the shot on goal. The ball went wide of the goal.

Their next penalty corner resulted in a goal. Catie Laraway, assisted by Sullivan and pushed the ball passed Dolloff.

In the following minutes, Assumption managed two more corners, both stopped by Dolloff. Andrea Koslowski took the shot of the first corner, followed by Abigail Heroth for the second. In their recovery, Sullivan intercepted the ball and passed it to teammate, Sheahan who then shot it past the goalie, bring the score to 5-0. After several more corner shots, the game ended at 75 minutes.

Assumption College moved to a record of 2-2, while Southern dropped to 1-4, with a home record of 1-3 and an away record of 0-4. For future games, the team will be looking at game footage for tip in improvement.

“We will be looking at the Assumption game, reviewing what we did or didn’t do,” Frassinelli said.
