As of Aug. 24, 2014, a majority of the freshmen moved into their dorm rooms. This is the time where freshmen start thinking they know it all. I mean after all, they did just rule their high schools as seniors.
But this isn’t high school.
This is just the beginning of the big bad world and some lessons needs to be instilled in order to enjoy and survive the college life, more specifically surviving Southern Connecticut State University.
“Don’t abuse Conn. Freshman 15 is real.” (Tiesha, junior) Yes, there is an all you can eat stop on campus, but don’t take it literally. Be wise when deciding what to eat and how much to eat. There have been multiple cases of sickness on campus due to overeating.
While still trying not to over-eat…
“Try the cookies in the North Campus Market.” (Alex, senior) Students and faculty alike rave about the cookies. They are known for the huge size and great taste. It won’t be hard to eat two or three in one sitting, but again, pace yourself.
Remember, you have four or more years of college. There’s plenty of time to try all of the delicious items Southern has to offer.
“Don’t walk alone at night.” (Anonymous, sophomore) Even though you are on a cozy sized campus, with everything about a 5-10 min walk, don’t forget where you are. This is New Haven, with a few buildings in Hamden.
The campus, though protected by our own campus police, is not closed. Anyone can walk onto the campus. Walk with a friend or a group. If you feel uneasy, the school provides escorts.
Visit the school website and residential life services. There you’ll find information on Late Night Owl Watch.
“Don’t pretend to be sleeping when you’re roommate brings a guy over.” (Rebecca, sophomore) That may sound silly, but take it seriously. If you ever feel uncomfortable in your own room, talk to your roommate (or roommates).
Be honest and open about your feelings. That is how you avoid awkward situations.
If problems worsen, simply speak to your RA or hall director. Remember the staff is here for you!
“If it means being early to class, so be it. Make sure you get that parking spot.” (Anonymous, junior) The general consensus on campus is that parking sucks! Be sure to get to campus early if you commute or leave your dorm early if you want to drive to class.
The traffic is hectic and parking close to the center of campus, by Engelman can be a nightmare. If you get there at nine, it’s already full.
“If you don’t know something, ask.” (Ben, senior) You’re a freshman, you’re not expected to know everything so don’t pretend to. If you don’t know whether a room or a building is, ask. If you don’t know how the meal plans work, ask. If you don’t know how to swipe into your building, ASK.
Most importantly…
“Listen to what people on campus say, because nine out of 10 times, they’re right.” (Lindsey, sophomore) It’s a fact. The people that have been on campus know what they’re talking about.
Now this doesn’t mean be susceptible to gossip. Just take in what everyone has to say. Signing guests in and out may seem annoying and unnecessary, but it is to keep you and your hall safe. Getting weekly, or daily, emails from the staff may seem over the top but the announcements are important. They let you know what is going on around campus, whether it is a cool activity or an emergency alert.
