With the season now in full swing, Owls Volleyball (11-1) continues to keep winning games, extending their streak to 10 games after three wins last week. They defeated both Concordia and American International College at home last Thursday and Friday, claiming each in close 3-2 victories.
Then, on the road at Dominican, Southern won 3 sets to 1 in a game where outside hitter Lauren McVey had 11 kills and 21 digs.
The team will next play on Sunday night, 9/17, at home against Bloomfield College.
On Friday against AIC, the Owls won a close first set 25-23, fueled by talented juniors McVey and Jade Black.
After trailing 18-14 in set two, Black sparked the Owls attack with back-to-back kills. A Sarah Beres block aided a 25-23 second set win.
Playing with their backs against the wall, AIC jumped out to a 7-1 lead, eventually winning the third set 25-19.
The Owls, looking tired in the fourth set, fell behind 9-3 before scoring 4 straight points following a timeout.
AIC freshman Britt Bryant provided back-to-back points to take the lead 20-18.
The teams would go back and forth, with AIC pulling through to win the fourth set 28-26.
“Lauren McVey and Jade Black were major difference makers in this game,” Owls head coach Lisa Barbaro said.
Black and McVey were again key contributors in the pivotal final set. They attacked the ball and communicated well with their teammates.
“I thought we did a really great job,” said Black, a junior. “We hustled for every point and our teamwork was really good.”
