Jayme Larson is a junior from Aurora, CO and a pitcher of the softball team at Southern. Larson pitched a no-hitter on April 17 against Bentley College, striking out 14 with just one walk.
Q: What is going through your mind when you are pitching?
A: That day we were coming off a pretty disappointing split against Stonehill, so I went out and mainly focused on giving up a good follow up performance and getting two wins that day.
Q: Are you aware of a no-hitter when you are on the mound?
A: Yes, you are aware, but there is the unwritten rule for baseball and softball that you never talk about it when it’s possible. But I was extremely nervous because I didn’t want to ruin the no-hitter. It’s less stress on our defense when I perform like that.
Q: What do you try to do off the field when you’re not pitching?
A: I know I am not the most dominating pitcher out there but I know my capabilities
as a three-year starter and my mindset every game is to perform to my best ability and win. I don’t hit so I can’t help myself out in that aspect, so holding a team to no runs is how I contribute. Plus it helps to have one of the best offensive teams in the region to have my back if I do make a mistake.
Q: How did you end up at Southern?
A: I chose SCSU because I molded with the coaching staff on my visit and I wanted to be a part of a competitive program that I could contribute to and that demanded excellence. Plus I really like that our team plays for each other in order to reach our common goals of winning.
