Starting construction on new parking garages, campus police have required commuter students to find alternative methods to reach the university, eliminating parking in commuter lots.
“We all have to make sacrifices for the benefit of the entire campus community,” said Dooley. “Campus parking is a joke as it is.”
This week, the state announced it would allot $10 million for the long-awaited parking garage project, guaranteeing to fund construction on the garages in lot #7, behind Moore Field House, and lots #8 and #9 beside Brownell Hall.
Banning cars from commuter lots will eliminate 3,500 spots, said Dooley.
Students can still park in either of the existing garages next to Davis Hall or the resident West Campus parking garage. Faculty and staff will keep their usual spots.
Dooley said the construction would start next week, upon the request of Governor Dannel P. Malloy, who made the decision to fund the project.
“We need to create jobs now,” said Malloy. “Giving Southern the money for the garages alleviates parking issues and employs residents.”
