The sweet smell of home-made goodies filled Engleman Hall as the ultimate frisbee team hosted a bake sale on April 3.

The team’s captain, physical education major Zach Chittenden, a junior, said the proceeds of the bake sale would go towards paying for new equipment and tournament expenses.

“If we have tournaments out of state, we are going to need funds for staying in a hotel,” Chittenden said. “Even if the tournament is in the state, we still have to pay a fee to enter.”

Chittenden described ultimate frisbee as a mix of football and soccer. He said players need to pass the frisbee to each other when running to make a goal on the field.

“It’s a great way to stay active,” Chittenden said. “There are a lot of people on our team that never played before college and we get to teach them the ways of the game.”

Chittenden has been playing ultimate frisbee for seven years now and this is his first season being captain of the team at the university.

“I love being able to share my knowledge of the game and spread the sport around campus,” Chittenden said.

One member of the team who was taught by Chittenden was environmental systems and sustainability major Emma Josmith, a sophomore. She has been on the team for only one semester.

“I was always nervous to do sports and I never did them in high school,” Josmith said. “It’s nice to get out of my comfort zone and having the team help me.”

Josmith baked two different types of cookies for the bake sale: pineapple pistachio and chocolate walnut. Other team members provided home-made cakes, chocolate covered strawberries, cupcakes and more.

“I haven’t been playing super long, but the team’s funding is important to me,” Josmith said. “I can improve my skills with the equipment we can buy from the sale.”

Exercise science major Will Chiero, a senior, is another member of the ultimate frisbee team who helped to host the bake sale. He said that he has been playing for four years at the university.

“Being on the team benefits me because I have an outlet of people that I know I can be myself around,” Chiero said. “It’s a lot of fun having a second family here on campus.”

The team practices on Mondays and Wednesdays behind the football field at the James Moore Field House. Chiero said they try to enter at least two tournaments every semester.

“It’s hard to do more without funding and that’s why we’re here doing this fundraiser,” Chiero said. “Hopefully we can make enough to enter another tournament.”

Chiero said the team did not think of an end goal for proceeds from their bake sale.

“We will be happy with whatever we make, anything can help us,” Chiero said.

Biology major Beatrice Dessejour, a senior, stopped by the tabling event to grab a sweet treat in between classes. She said the goodies looked delicious.

“I think it’s important for us to support each other on campus and I’m glad I got to help out the team,” Dessejour said.
