Softball pulls off miraculous comeback to win NE-10 tournament

The softball team celebrating their amazing comeback.

Pete Paguaga, Sports Editor:
SCSU softball capped off an amazing comeback over the weekend en route to their second consecutive Norhteast-10 championship.
After being seeded second overall in the tournament, the Owls lost their first game against Merrimack University 6-4. After losing that first game the Owls were dropped into the loser’s bracket of the double elimination tournament. They needed to win two in a row to even play for a chance at the title, and even then they would need to beat that team twice in the championship round.
This feat was all accomplished in one day for the Owls as they beat Adelphi by the score of 4-2 in eight innings, and then the University of New Haven 4-3 to go to the championship round against the team they lost the opening game to, Merrimack.
The Owls were not phased at all as they took the first game from Merrimack 5-3 and then capped off their run as they rolled over them 9-2 in six innings, due to the run rule.
Sophomore Kristin Whitley was named the Tournament’s Most Valuable Player and juniors Jayme Larson and Jessica Rose were named to the All Tournament Team.
The Owls will now compete in the NCAA tournament where they will go up against Dowling College on Friday at 3:30 p.m. Southernctowls.com will have live updates from the game.

Key Owl Stats:

Kristin Whitley leads the team with a .448 batting average, 11 homeruns and 51 RBI.
Jayme Larson leads the team with 19 wins, 21 complete games and a 2.26 ERA.
Jessica Rose is second on the team with 10 homeruns and 47 RBI.
