Wilson wants to be a household name

Not only has the Owls’ running back Diante Wilson, a sophomore, won the Northeast (NE) 10 Weekly Honor Roll last week, but he wants to be remembered for what he’s done on the field.  

Wilson is from Union, New Jersey where he attended Union High School where he amassed 2,139 total yards and 16 touchdowns in his 22 career games.  

Wilson’s junior year of high school was one of his best. He rushed for 1,114 yards in 13 games. He was able to get into the end zone 10 times that season.  

Recently, Wilson has been dominated thus far this season.  He has a recent 100-yard rushing yard game and has been a dual threat running back that can catch and run the ball. Wilson can run between the tackles and catch the ball out of the backfield.  

In the matchup against Saint Anselm, Wilson rushed for 151 yards and had 19 yards receiving. Wilson had a total of 170 yards for the Owls offense that game. Wilson prides himself on having a great work ethic and takes pride in the work that goes into football.  

Wilson said, “I want to be the best on the field. No one is going to outwork me.”  

Family has played a big part in Wilson’s life. Wilson said what gives him the energy to keep playing well is family. Wilson said  his family is his backbone.  

   From an early age Wilson had family by his side, with football and more. Wilson gets confidence from his family.  

“My family is what keeps me going, they love watching me play and I love them for that,” Wilson said.  

Wilson’s family roots play a big part in who he is today. He works hard in practice and gets the job done. Owls’ offensive coordinator, Chris Bergetski, said Wilson is quick to improve any flaws in his play. 

“He really doesn’t make the same mistake twice. So, that’s a big reason why I think he’s taken the strides he has taken since he’s been here,” Bergetski said. 

Wilson runs  with aggression and force Bergetski said. Bergetski said, “His strength is being an aggressive runner; he likes to run through the defensive and get downhill. He’s definitely improved his ability to catch the ball out of the back field. His pass protection he had gotten better each day.” 

There’s no doubt that Wilson’s work ethic shows on the field. Wilson is on pace to break his rushing yard statistics from last season. He rushed for 490 yards in 2021. So far this season he has rushed for 276 yards and scored two rushing touchdowns.   

 “He is a great kid; he stays focused and gets the job done,” Bergetski said. 

Wilson said that he likes to be a student of the game and study the upcoming opponent.  

Bergetski and the coaches love him, especially after practice hours. “He’s a jokester, he is always messing around with his teammates and giving the guys a good laugh,” said Bergetski. 

Owls’ quarterback Joe Bernard, a senior, said, “He’s a great teammate. He always has a smile and willing to work hard.” 

Bernard said he is such a hard runner; it takes a lot to bring him down. .

Wilson said that everyone on the team has the same goal every week which is to win.  

“By the time my four years is done everyone will know my name,” said Wilson. “I will be a household name.”
