Lacrosse senior day win

It was senior day for Owls’ lacrosse this past Saturday at Jess Dow Field, and the team did their best to make sure it was one to remember.

In what turned out to be a nail biter, lacrosse defeated the College of Saint Rose Golden Knights by the final score of 12-9.

“Today’s win was huge,” attacker Bayleigh Takacs, a senior, said. “It was one of those games that could have gone either way. Looking at their record and looking at who they beat, they beat New Haven and Bentley, and those are two teams that we fell short to. So, it was definitely huge for us to come out strong knowing that we were a match up with them and taking the win just meant so much.”

With the win, the Owls are now 4-10 on the season, with all four victories coming at home on their own turf.

“We practice here every day; we know how to run our field and it feels good to have our parents here. Not all parents can go to other games,” Attacker Karlie Rowe, a senior, said, “Our fans, other students coming out, it just felt great to have everyone here. The energy is so much better at home.”

Rowe and Takacs were two of four seniors honored as part of the senior day festivities, however it should be noted that nowadays, with COVID-19 having granted an extra year of eligibility for college athletes, all four are projected to return to the team next year.

It would be overkill to breakdown all 21 goals scored in this game, but here come the highlights.

Takacs had it going early on offense, scoring all three of her goals in the first half, including the first goal of the game, to give her a team-leading 34 goals on the season.

“It was a high shot, so that’s always iffy with me, but it was definitely an exciting feeling,” Takacs said smiling. “Getting the first point on the board is always a good thing for us. It was a good start to the game.”

The Owls’ players were in good moods on the field and sideline because of the emotions surrounding senior day.

Midfielder Mia Pulisciano, a senior, said: “We got into the locker room, and everyone had all our stuff for us, and they had our parents write letters to us and immediately we all started crying because it’s bittersweet, and I think it made everybody pumped up and ready to play today.”

The Owls were up 10-5 early in the fourth quarter when the Golden Knights began to mount a comeback, scoring three unanswered goals to cut the Owls lead to 10-8 with nine minutes left to play.

The Owls offense was able to score a couple more goals and the defense tightened up, as they held on for the 12-9 victory to end senior day on a pleasant note.

“Senior Day, had to come out hot,” Rowe said. “We’re coming off a couple of tough losses, so we really just wanted to come out and show who we actually are.”

Rowe scored a game-high four goals in this one and now has 33 goals on the season, one behind Takacs for the team lead.

Attacker Savannah Feinberg, a sophomore, also had an impressive three goal game.

Lacrosse has just two games left in the regular season, with the next being their home finale against the Le Moyne College Dolphins on Wednesday, April 27 where they look to ride the wave of their senior day high into another home victory.

“Our underclassmen did such a nice job making this day so special,” Takacs said. “They filled it with so much excitement and love and we just wanted to play for them, for hyping us up.”
