Business as usual – Opinion Column

Morgan DouglasSports Editor

The NFL draft, NBA playoffs, the race to the playoffs in the NHL, MLB back in full swing.

There’s a lot of sports going on, while simultaneously. not a lot is going on in sports.

Hear me out.

It is not as though there is a lot of buzz surrounding the NFL Draft like you would normally see in other years.

Lackluster franchises have the top picks and in terms of hype, for whatever that’s worth, there is not a lot of buzz surrounding this year’s quarterback class which is usually the topic du jour for football shows on sports networks.

There are not a lot of big name quarterbacks being thrown around as trade candidates on draft night either, unless the notion of a Jimmy Garoppolo trade does it for you.

Star wide receivers like Deebo Samuel and/or DK Metcalf could be on the move, but seriously, there are so many receivers out there now and a whole new crop coming in this week, so a couple of Pro-Bowlers changing teams may not have the seismic shift across the league I would hope for in terms of writing this column.

It’s business as usual.

The NBA Playoffs have been without a major storyline, unless you want to count the Devin Booker injury, but injuries to star players are par for the course during this time of year.

Playoff series that we already know are over are being dragged out to produce ratings and more money for the league, because they know marks like me will watch all of it.

Ben Simmons is not playing.

Again, business as usual.

The bleacher creatures who dwell in the outfield of Yankee Stadium are mad at anyone not wearing pinstripes and the Boston fans have a bone to pick with Kyrie Irving.

What else is new?

This past sports week is becoming my own personal Groundhog Day.

I saw that Terrell Owens caught a touchdown pass from Johnny Manziel in one of those novelty football leagues that come and go each spring, and couldn’t help but smile, thinking that those two have run through every knock-off, sideshow football league in existence before finally finding each other on a field in Georgia.

It’s like the end of a romantic comedy. A bad romantic comedy, it should be said.

Quick. Somebody give me a headline I can write 500 words about.

It is during a week like this when I understand why ESPN has had nothing but wall-to-wall LeBron James coverage across decades.

Speaking of LeBron, let’s talk about him and the Lakers.

Just kidding. I’d never do that to you.
