Free food with ProCon

Morgan DouglasSports Editor

I have two words to make any student on campus fall in love with the Programs Council, or ProCon

Free food.

That’s right folks. ProCon hosts multiple events on campus every week and more often than not, you can score some free chow just by checking in with your student ID.

On a dreary Monday, as your stomach begins to talk to you, there is nothing quite like receiving the news that there is free Chick-fil-A lurking about somewhere in the Adanti Student Center.

It sounds almost too good to be true, like a macabre joke of sorts, until you find yourself in the ballroom or theatre amongst fellow students, and it is like finding the exclusive, hidden club and it’s the place to be.

You give a knowing nod to the others standing in line, as if to say, nice going for finding this hidden gem.

Here I am, walking around with a little protein shake and a banana in my backpack when I get word that there’s free fried chicken, corn bread, collard greens and macaroni and cheese upstairs. Are you kidding me?

Salute to you ProCon and everyone involved in the Programs Council.

All pros. No cons.

I did not even mention that every Thursday ProCon provides free peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to students.

As a journalist, I know not to accept free food, gifts, bribes, or anything of that nature from those who I am covering for a story.

However, I do not write stories about Pro Con, nor have I ever interviewed anyone from there, so I feel this is fair game and just me giving them a shout out in this opinion piece, because as a college student with limited money for food, the service ProCon provides is one I tremendously respect.

As I peruse owlconnect.com to see what events ProCon has coming up as of this writing, I see a brunch scheduled for Monday, April 11 and an “Ice Cream Emergency” scheduled for Monday, April 18 at 12 p.m. at the academic quad.

The way I see it, no student on campus should be going hungry on Mondays.

For the Southern News, Monday is layout day for the newspaper, and the day I always take advantage of ProCon’s services.

I’ve already mentioned the soul food and Chick-fil-A but forgot to mention the other snacks and treats I’ve received from them this past year just for showing up and having someone punch in my ID number. It’s a beautiful thing.

So beautiful, they’ve moved me to writing about them and basically give them free promotion. I never do something like this. I’m always writing about a game of some sorts, but I felt compelled to profess my love for ProCon and the free food.

ProCon also offers a lot of other cool stuff, like games and activities, but obviously you can tell where my priorities are.

So, if any of this free food and fun games stuff sounds interesting to you, follow along with what Pro Con is up to and maybe I’ll see you at the “Ice Cream Emergency.”
