Steinauer has historic day as Owls Crush Concordia, 96-47

The Owls improved to 8-4 on the season with a 96-47 win over Concordia Wednesday afternoon at Moore Field House. Junior Kiana Steinauer led the way with 33 points and 31 rebounds, the latter setting a new single-game school record. Senior Amanda Pfohl contributed with a career-high 20 points and Allie Smith and Aaliyah Walker both finished with 10.

“It’s a great accomplishment,” Steinauer said. “I’ve been working hard all summer towards my jumping and finding ways to score.”

The effort she gave off was something she has been building to. Multiple times this season Steinauer has collected double-digit rebound totals, including a 20-point, 20-rebound effort at home against New York Tech last week. Her performance also became the second 30-point, 30- rebound game in conference history and the second ever Division II women’s basketball single performance of more than 30 rebounds since 1996.

“She just keeps stepping up, it’s what she does,” Lynch said. “We always give her these goals each game — she should have 10 and 10 by half, a double-double by half and she’s been getting more than that the last couple times.”

Mixed in with her record rebounding performance, Steinauer also had a season-best in points. Outside of Pfohl, Smith, Walker and Imani Wheeler with nine, Erin Ryder posted a career-high 14 off the bench, including 5-8 shooting and 2-4 from three-point range.

“It was a good team win. We shared the ball well and had a lot of assists,” Lynch said. “We made some fixes from this last weekend … we have some fixes we want to button up before we really get into NE10 play.”

They outplayed a strong Bears team last week and defeated them, 68-60, before they went on the road and gave Chestnut Hill their second win of the season, falling by a final margin of 69-63.

“We had a really great team effort all around,” Lynch said. “It speaks to their character as a whole how they bounce back … it’s always tough [having the rest over Christmas] but they need that rest. They’ve always come back ready to go.”

Following this week, the team won’t hit the floor again until they host Dominican College Dec. 30.

“Everyone really stepped up,” Steinauer said. “Erin had a career-high and Allie played well. Everyone’s really stepping up this year … it’s a change [on the roster] from 17 to 11 so it’s just awesome that we’re all coming together as a team, working as a unit and doing whatever we can to win.”
