The first day of October was kicked off with the Health and Wellness Center teaming up with the Fitness Center for the their annual walk throughout campus in honor of breast cancer awareness, as well as to usher in the National Month of Walking.

Starting from Conn Hall, the group of particpants began walking, sporting pink clothing and other accessories in support of breast cancer awareness. The route featured the academic side of campus. showing off the scenary, in paticular the new science building. The particpants came back through campus. walking along Fitch Street around Crescent Street going through Founder’s Gate and walking back to Conn Hall for a total of roughly a mile and a half.

“October is national walking month,” said Jessica Scibeck, Assistant Director of the Fitness Center. “So we’re trying to get people to start improving their health now. But also being aware and walking in memory of friends and family affected by cancer, most of us are touched by cancer in our lives.” To this end the walk certainly both achieved both goals. In addition to partcipants, volunteers helped out by attending tables set up outside of Conn Hall and by directing walkers, outlining the route.

“I’m an exercise science student,” said Vcky Conde. “So my professor, whose a part of this event, asked us to come if we didn’t have class. I was happy to come join the cause and help people and have fun. Its important for people, some have their own stories and experiences.”

Regardless of what brought out students, the Breast Cancer Walk was a great way to be active and think about personnal health.

As Jessica said before the walk began, “Taking care of our own health is a good way to honor others.”
