Students and staff help give back for a Day of Service

Southern Connecticut State University hosted their ninth annual Dr. Ronald D. Herron Day of Service this Saturday. This event was designed to let Southern students, faculty and staff give back to the Greater New Haven community.

Rachel Noto, a graduate intern at Southern, helped run the event. Activities included cleaning up the community, painting and prepping for the winter season. Noto and the Office of Student Development helped get over 700 students to join, which is the most the event has seen before. It lasted from around 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Noto and the Day of Service participants’ main goal was to establish service sites with non-profit organizations in the New Haven community.

This event had many different people contribute in different ways. The participants split up into groups to accommodate various areas.

Taylor Bird, a junior and communication disorders major, participated as a leader for her INQ class and thought it went really well.

“My favorite part is to see everyone come together as a group and be really excited about doing community service together,” said Bird. “It was just a very rewarding feeling to give back. I think it was good for everyone.”

The Office of Student Life had to do two waves of registration because so many people wanted to get involved. Due to the amount of people, it took a lot of organization and effort to get everyone in the correct groups.

Bird’s group ended up going to Edgewood Park in New Haven to pick up trash. On top of that, the group raked up leaves at the park, which led to a celebration to giving back.

“One of the best parts of the day was raking the leaves,” said Bird. “My group ended up making a big leaf pile and throwing all the leaves in the air for a kind of celebration. We ended up having to rake them up again but it was fun.”

That was a feel-good moment for Bird and her group. An event like this was designed exactly for those moments.

According to attending students, Southern’s Day of Service was a huge success. Southern plans to run this event again next year.
