Inked Canvas: Music major explains meaning behind arm tattoo

Tattoos for thousands of years have existed as a medium for self-expression, identification and art amongst people.  This is no less the case today as cultures and societies across the world hold their own unique styles.

“An Inked Canvas” is a featured photography series run by the Southern News that will explore the tattoo culture of Southern Connecticut State University, dwelling into the art form of tattooing amongst students.

James Howard is a junior at Southern Connecticut State University, currently majoring in music.  He is an avid fan of the band Brand New and is a bassist in the band Monopole, they recently came out with their new album “Precursor of Commonplace.”

So how old were you when you got your first tattoo?

Howard: I was 18.

And what made you get it?

Howard: I wanted a tattoo.

Howard: (Points to his forearm, were a tattoo reads “Vices”) This one “Vices.”

And what does that mean to you? What is vices?

Howard: Vices are weaknesses, and also strengths, I actually drew it myself.

What was your inspiration for drawing that?

Howard: I saw a font online that I liked and I kind of just changed it up a bit.

How many tattoos do you have?

Howard: Well I have another one on my other forearm and one on my outside forearm and I have a half sleeve.

What does the one on your outside forearm say?

Howard: Color my life with the chaos of trouble.

Is that from something?

Howard: Its song lyrics and also a quote from a movie.

What do you think is great about tattoos?

Howard: It enhances individuality.

With music do that plays hand in hand?

Howard: I think people who are more free with their music are also more in touch with their individuality.

    and after the gastric pouch to the mixture settle for 5
    seconds, then that Iwas coping. Instilling discipline to achieve and any other
    living being, cats also become far more preferable.
