Study Abroad offers new travel opportunities for students

Southern is offering several different study abroad trips this summer. Go abroad with Southern professors who have a wide variety of subjects available such as world languages including French, Italian and Spanish. Study fine arts in Paris or participate in hands on experiences in Bermuda and Iceland.

Michael Schindel, the Associate Coordinator and Risk Management Liaison at the International Programs Office, located in Engleman B129-A, said this summer there are a lot of returning programs and also a couple new ones students should look into.

Schindel said if a student is taking six credits abroad, they do qualify for financial aid because they will be considered full-time. He said if someone is interested in studying abroad in one of the summer programs to let the Financial Aid office know so they can work with the student.

One of the newer programs is a two week trip to Beijing, China. Students will be attending a seminar in International and Comparative Librarianship. This includes several lectures and library tours. The program costs $3270.00 and includes airfare, daily breakfast, travel and all tickets needed for tours and cultural activities.

One of the longest running summer programs offered, according to Schindel, is returning again: A four week trip to Salamanca and Andalucía, Spain. Students will go abroad with Dr. Carlos Aboleda and can earn up to six credits. Wide ranges of courses are offered all the way from Spanish 100 to Independent studies.

This programs costs $4350 and includes airfare, all meals, one night in Madrid, three credits tuition at the Colegio de España, one day trip to Segovia, one day trip to La Alberca and a five day trip to Andalucia.

Another fairly new program being offered is a trip to Paris that will be offering French and Art classes for students. There are some prerequisites students will need to fulfill before taking certain classes abroad. These can be found at SouthernCT.edu/internationalprograms/shorttermprograms/summerparis.

This trip costs $4100 and includes airfare, single accommodation with private bath at Cité Universitaire, many different museum passes and more.

The English department is offering a three week program to Rome, which Schindel said is very popular. The two courses students will be taking are Literature 488: The Classical Tradition in Western Literature and Literature 302: Literature of the New Testament. English 112 is a prerequisite.

This trip costs $2460 and includes airfare, transportation, room and board, three group lunches and dinners and entrance fees to museums and historical sites.

Schindel said he studied in Italy when he was in high school and said, “It’s gorgeous, it’s the best place in the world.”

The World Languages and Literatures Department is also offering a trip to Italy, but in Tuscany or more specifically in the historic town of Montepulciano. Several Italian language courses will be offered, from Italian I to Italian IV and also a Literature class.

This nearly month long trip costs $4350 and includes airfare, room and board, transportation, 29 group dinners and more.

A trip to Guatemala is being organized by Southern’s Public Health Department. Graduate and undergraduate students are welcome on the two week trip. Schindel said students on this trip would be very active in the community there and will also participate in rainforest hikes and see the Mayan pyramids.

The cost of the trip is $2400 and includes airfare, transportation, room and board, entrance fees to course attractions and more.

Southern will also be offering a trip to Iceland with the Geography Department. This two week trip offers two courses: Environmental Economic Geography and Field Techniques. During this trip students will live in hotels or hostels and will also make a stop at a guest house on a private nature and heritage site.

The cost of the trip is $2750 and includes airfare, transportation, some group dinners and more.

Another newer trip being offered is to Bermuda. In this one week course, students will be doing field studies in various areas on the island. Schindel said there will also be various opportunities for students to go snorkeling. Students will be staying at the Bermuda Institute of Marine Sciences.

The cost of this trip is $2000 and it includes airfare, room and board, transportation, three meals a day, some field equipment and an underwater camera.

Schindel said each programs allows a certain number of students, anywhere from 10 to 30 depending on the program and the professors group traveling preferences.

“All of the programs have the same deadlines, March first,” said Schindel, who recommends handing in applications early to ensure a spot. The trip to Guatemala is an exception: the deadline is April 30th.

The International Programs office will be holding two meetings a week for students who want to know more about the summer programs. Schindel also said students are welcome to stop by and grab a brochure about the trip they are most interested in going on.
