The Love Doctor 4/18/12

Dear Dr. Strangelove,

The man I have been dating is currently 30. I turn 24 in a few months, and other than the big age difference, everything in our “relationship” is great. We get along well, I feel comfortable with him and our aspirations relate. However, I can’t help but wonder how someone his age is not engaged or planning to settle down. This isn’t New York City, and unfortunately, I don’t think he had many relationships. We haven’t been dating for that long so I don’t want to ask him about his past. Could there be something wrong with him? I can’t stop wondering why he’s single.

—Why the Wait?

Dear Why the Wait,
The last thing you want to do is jump to conclusions. No matter how sketchy something may seem, you always have to give the benefit of the doubt. If it really eats away at you, you can always casually bring up his past by talking about yours first, or think of “cues” to make him talk about it. I’m sure you’ll get to discussing it eventually, just be patient. Until you find out the deal don’t judge him, and just enjoy your time with him in the mean time. He may have had a bad breakup or is waiting for the right girl to settle down with. Everyone moves at their own pace.
