Fall TV Guide: What to watch

Kelsey MixCopy Editor

With summer sadly coming to a close and schools once again opening their doors, it’s hard to believe there’s a silver lining. But wait, fall is approaching which means new shows to watch on TV aren’t far behind. Some of the most watched shows are coming back for new seasons starting this September.

Now I’ve never been one to give into the Modern Family craze, but this show and its actors have won countless Emmy’s and other Academy Awards so it must be good. The blend of numerous different actors works effortlessly for this show and viewers continue to fall in love with it. Wednesday, Sept. 24 marks the beginning of the sixth season for Modern Family.

One of the best political thrillers on television today is Scandal; do not be put off by the politics. If you’ve been waiting to see the continuation from this season three cliffhanger like I have, I feel your pain. Kerry Washington is perfect as Olivia Pope and it’s definitely a must-watch. The fourth season of this drama returns Thursday, Sept. 25.

Also premiering on Sept. 25 is the ever-so popular medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy. Going on their 11th season, this is easily one of the most-watched shows to date. Some characters have come and gone, some were killed off, but some favorites have stuck around. Viewers have said the show isn’t what it used to be, but they’ll continue to watch it just to see what happens.

Another admired show is premiering their 10th season on Wednesday, Oct. 1. Starting in 2005 alongside Grey’s, Criminal Minds is a show that will always play re-runs and everyone will always love them. Criminal Minds isn’t your average crime show, it actually follow the lives of the team of officers and work it into the cases they discover. This is a cop show that will be staying on air for as long as the producers can drag it out for.

If you have never watched any of these shows, their viewers would highly encourage that you do; and one way to do that is Netflix. All of these shows, and so much more, are available on Netflix at your disposal—if you have a subscription.

There are two sides of the arguments when it comes to Netflix. One, it’s ruining real television because it’s on the Internet as opposed to watching from a TV in your living room. On the other hand, it actually might be helping regular television. Netflix never shows a season of a show that’s currently being aired weekly on regular television—unlike Hulu. So after finally catching up with a show on Netflix, you’re able to be a part of the fun when new episodes air.

This past July, Netflix refreshed their stash of TV shows and movies. They deleted over 80 TV shows and movies and added 50 new ones. The CEO of Netflix Reed Hastings was interviewed last year at GQ magazine and they got his take on the concept of regularly programmed television.

“The traditional entertainment ecosystem is built on it, and it’s a totally artificial concept,” said Hastings. “The point of managed dissatisfaction is waiting. You’re supposed to wait for your show that comes on Wednesday at 8 p.m., wait for the new season, see all the ads everywhere for the new season, talk to your friends at the office about how excited you are.”

Hastings thinks that this method is dead. Even though we still have Modern Family viewers raving about the newest episode the day after it airs, this will now always be a constant battle between the Internet and television. And this doesn’t even include the illegal sites.
